Who made this car originally?

yema m72 d 300x225 Who made this car originally?

The  car to the left was featured on CCT Green earlier today, it’s supposedly being made by Sichuan Yema, but we hear its former French technology. With CCT not being too hot on the French car scene (who would want to be?) we’re not too sure if the above car really has French heritage or not, it certainly looks quirky enough to be French. I do remember a Swiss electric car company that made something similar, but went bankrupt at least three times in the process. Any hints or tips on who the manufacturer or designer originally was would be much appreciated.

Answers in the comment box, either here or over on CCT Green.

    Matra M72…

The original design is a Matra M72, built by the French in prototype form only in 2000. It was almost produced in collaboration with Rover in the UK when BMW took over the ailing UK maker. It could have been an MG.

This is a really cool car. Not everybody will like it, but I think it looks fantastic. If they are licenced to make it, I hope they do and bring it to Europe.

  4. Correct, ABX, a near copy of the Matra M72. Yema made at least five copies of two different models, the second model has an extra side window. They explained me that they make these models for alternative energy and hybrid experiments: gasoline, cng (natural gas) and electricity.

Matra M72 indeed, never made it to production but some units were build for the 2000 Paris Auto Show.
