Roewe 95 – spotted again – but will it ever be made?
The Roewe 850Roewe 950 has been spotted again, this time in a Shanghai Roewe dealership’s shop:
The Roewe 95 is based on a Ssangyong Chairman, and uses an ex-Mercedes gearbox and engine. Since the Ssangyong bankruptcy, SAIC has been kicked out of the Ssangyong stable, so did the rights to the Roewe 95 get transfered along to SAIC, or did they loose it when Ssangyong went bankrupt? It was very much expected that SAIC would launch the Roewe 95 at the last Shanghai Auto Show, which was at the same time Ssangyong went into bankruptcy protection.
So the question remains, will SAIC put the Roewe 95 into production, or not? Or do the blue and red lights behind the grill mean that this model is a one off for a government VIP?

Hello Ash, how can you say 85 when the car is clearly marked S95 at the rear?
Not an attractive design at all, and on a Ssangyong chassis? Even LESS desireable…
Don’t make it!
I also expected to see this car launched at the Shanghai Show. Maybe there is now a big problem with the IPR question. Interestingly my contact in SAIC feigns all knowledge of this vehicle.
Also if you look at the shot from the front right side, isn’t there another of these vehicles behind it?
I would expect if the car is launched for it to be called the 950. It would make sense in Roewe nomenclature. Probably we’re going to see a 150, 350 (N1), 550, 750, and maybe 950.
People,
I would not say this model is not so nice, but comparatively with Roewe 550 and some others they are developing it looks just too poor in terms of design (inside and outside).
The delay of louching this model, believe that is based on the fact that this market is stopped in between a crisis that unable meddium cars consumers to go one step higher, this has been the “order instruction” to many manufacturers, to delay expensive cars/vehicles projects in favor of more economical and meddium class produtcts.
Anyway, beside the comments done about the 95, Roewe is really developing good new projects (550 for example is one car I would say that anyone would be proud to give a ride on front of a Brazilian Beach). Believe that for those who believe that Chinese just copy vehicles they should pay more attention to brands who are really developing new products.
About the Ssangyong, someone believes that they will scape from this legal bunkrupcy protection? I believe that SAIC should already have presented some secret pictures from their Roewe based Action.
I wish from Brazil the very best regards to Ash and all China Car Time Readers,
Jorge Irineu Hosang
Roewe 95 is basically a Ssangyong Chairman CKD; SAIC planned to import Chairman as CKD from Ssangyong and assemble them at its Chinese shop.
I believe SAIC already made the down payment for the first 300 kits, but you know that money has been flushed down the toilet if you have been following the Ssangyong disaster going on in Korea.
Organized labor is nice when it protects workers rights, but these bullheaded Ssangyong workers have been on the road to self destruction for a long time now. And so the newly rich Chinese will never know the joys of driving a Chairman….while neither Ssangyoug management nor workers will ever take advantage of each other again.
