BYD’s E6 in the BBC

From The BBC:

BYD says that its new E6 electric car due out before the end of the year will do 250 miles (400km) on a single charge.

This is a very big number. The Tesla electric sports car does almost as much, but has little room for anything else in the car but the battery.

The E6 is roomy with space for five passengers and a good-sized boot. The battery tucks under the back seat.

It needs 7-8 hours with a domestic plug to charge the car but BYD – it stands for Build Your Dreams – says a specially developed fast charging point with a lead the diameter of a fire hose will fill up the car in just one hour.

You can get half a charge in only 10 minutes.

If these claims are accurate and if BYD can persuade either the Chinese government or a Chinese city to install a network of the fast chargers, then this large hatchback could be the vehicle that makes the breakthrough for electric cars.

Extraordinary step?

Let us look at the accuracy of the claim first. BYD is already the world’s number two in rechargeable batteries, and for the E6 it is using a ferrous battery it has developed itself.

There is a reputational risk in exaggerating the claims of a product. And that could be translated into a legal risk if people buy shares in the publicly quoted company as a result of misleading information.

Time will tell, very doubtful claims, and yet to be proven. But hell who knows???

BYD has been extensively discussed at green car sites either as a electric car vendor or a battery supplier, and the result isn’t too promising.

Basically, BYD battery failed to win any significant foreign design wins to date it bid on, with Koreans sweeping the current round of deals. Daimler and Mitsubishi Fuso uses SK Energy’s, while BMW and VW signed up for Samsung batteries. GM uses LG’s battery, and Ford uses Magna’s battery which is a license production of KoKam’s battery.

The last foreign battery competition BYD is still participating is VW’s E-Up! EV car competing against Samsung(VW has BYD powered car and Samsung power car running side by side for a comparative testing), and the word is that Samsung is expected to beat out BYD on that deal too.

Hey IHC, I didn’t know you were still around. I suppose it’s not surprising to see that your comments are still 100% negative towards the chinese auto industry – I suppose some things will never change. Now, I will not dispute any of the information you have posted here, except to say this – while BYD might not win bids for battery business with other foreign companies, I DO find it interesting that BYD is out there going for it NOW. I’m not saying the E6 is the best electric car out there, or that it will be, or anything else – but it IS the first one that is somewhat affordable and the FIRST one from a major auto company – and where did you get the price of $40,000 for the E6? No other website or news source has given any price for the E6 yet, how is it you magically have this information? How do you know that the E6′s range will be less than what is advertised? How do you know that the 250 mile range was achieved on a test track at a constant 35mph? Are you willing to tell us who (or what website or news source) your sources are for this information? If you cannot give the rest of us a chance to verify your claims, then do us a favor – stop posting until you can give us FACTS that we can confirm independently. I am not trying to be insulting or incendiary – I simply want the opportunity to confirm this information for myself. I’ll be waiting.

The E6 will sell for £30,000 (~50k USD)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and is aimed initially at the eco-conscious California market. When the price comes down with mass production, it’ll be rolled out properly in China.

They should package it into something that looks a bit better. Chinese reputation and ugly looks are going to win it any sales to start out with. They need to come out with someone that your jaw drops when you see it and back it up with some quality. Otherwise they are pushing their reputation back 10 years like Korea did. Then they might end up pulling out of US sales after a few years of losing money and expect to come back later. Better to hit hard the right way instead of doing it half ass.

Are not going to win it any sales to start out with. Slow fingers.

    I love China.

I’ve seen prices for the E-6 saying about $40K or was that the DM-6, I’m not sure.

The car I want to see in the US is E-3 which after it gets into mass production should sell in the $16K range. That is the Corolla size full electric and will take care of my needs.

    Go China

BYD E6 electric car 250 miles (400km) battery approximately
the same as the Tesla electric sports car, but the Tesla
accelerates 2.5 times faster. The BYD e6 is much heavier
at 4500 lbs vs Tesla’s 2700 lbs. The BYD E6 ferrous Lithium battery is not an entirely unknown technology but the technology fell out of favor to LiIon years ago because LiIon has a higher power density. The advantage to ferrous Lithium battery technology is that it has a lower heat dissipation characteristics and it is cheaper to make. The disadvantage is that you need a battery that is about 20 to 30 percent bigger than a LiIon to hold the same charge. Limiting the e6 so slower speed and acceleration rates than the Tesla will increase the battery life and allow for a efficient electric motor operations. The BYD E6 claims appear to be on spot with reality and not exaggerated. Sofar Tesla owners seem to indicate that their battery packs are holding out. The quality of the battery packs are going to be very important in winning over drivers to electric vehicles – since replacing the battery packs would be an expensive job. Over the years, many automakers have made exaggerated claims – but that has never translated to a legal risk if people buy shares in the publicly quoted company as a result of misleading information. The major risk to shareholders is product safety. For example, if a vehicle is inherently unstable at high speeds and flips over – shareholders are at risk. The other possible risks to shareholders is patent infringements and mismanagement/illicit operations by top executives.
