Fudi produce ugliest vehicle in 2010

26 October 2009 13 Comments

There are quite a few vehicles going around the roads here in China that make you wonder what on earth the owner was actually thinking when they walked into the dealership and said “I want that one“, usually my ugly car mirth is saved for my personal ugly favourite, the Peugeot 207 sedan, but now the Fudi SUV might just take its place:

The Fudi Explorer6 is basically the usual ‘pick up truck with a cover‘ SUV that are popular with farmers and drivers in third/fourth tier cities in the Chinese interior. They are popular for their low price, but relatively large storage capacity.

Fudi are a small, Guangdong based company that specialize in making cheap SUV’s and trucks for the Chinese market, however a larger part of their business is building truck and pick up parts for their partners, Dongfeng, Changfeng, Greatwall and Dandong Huang Hai, so whilst they Fudi seem to know a lot about building parts for trucks, they dont seem to know how to design a grill for one one.

The good news about the Explorer6 is that it is based off the first generation (1982-1991) Mitsubishi Pajero platform, and comes with ABS/EBD as well as parking sensors for those that wish to back this baby up into some tight spots. Engine power is expected to come from a Greatwall sourced 2.8Turbo Charged diesel engine which produced 225N.m of torque at low down revs, making it perfect for the farm.

The Explorer6 is expected to launch quietly at next months Guangzhou Auto Show, and will be priced sub 100,000rmb.

Fudi has now become “Foday”. Kind of like Futian becoming Foton..
I believe it’s an Isuzu rather than a Mitsubishi-based body. It doesn’t have a platform but rather a ladder frame, which may be Mitsubishi’s design, I’m not sure.
Changfeng proper never sourced its bodies from Fudi, but its subsidiary Changfeng Yangzi did.
Looks like maybe Great Wall is now trading engines for bodies.

It isn’t ugly. Just another article from an editor with bad taste in cars to start out with.

Sorry I made you sad but come on. Cool Bear So Cool and this is the ugliest car of the year? To each their own I guess.

By the way I just test drove a BYD F0. I was very very disappointed. If I had never driven a car before it might have been ok. Handling was the worst of any car I have ever driven. The breaks left me afraid that they weren’t going to stop the car and they squealed like crazy. This was a 10 day old car. The suspension left no feeling for the steering and the view out was really bad. I won’t go into any details on interior quality or anything like that because it is expected. But I felt less safe in that car than I do on a motorcycle in traffic here. I thin 40,000 rmb is too high.

The Coolbear isnt cool? I loved the Scion range, it was so right for China, but Greatwall made it first….

No it isn’t cool. 90% of the ownders in the US are over 45. It was suppose to be a brand for young people and it turned out to be the new Buick in the US. In the US you have to be over 60 to own a Buick.

It’s not that bad. Has some personality. I kinda dig the front end.

Don’t get me started on the Cool Bear.

the Cool Bear IS cool, and it isn’t aimed at consumers over 45, nor is it aimed for the U.S. market. In China, most car buyers nowadays are quite young, so it doesn’t matter what percentage of car owners in the U.S. are over 45.

Ed I neve said the cool bear was aimed at over 45. I just said that is what it turned out to be in the US. In the US the market is different. Buick is for old people only. No one else would touch it other than Tiger Woods to gets paid Millions to do so. Same with the original Scion XB which the Cool Bear is a copy of. They thought young people would like it but very little did. I grew up in the US and now live in China. I would hve to say I don’t see it as being very cool. The factory below mine bought one 2 months ago and he already sold it. It was in the shop for warranty repair every other day. I am curious what brand Chinese cars are really something comparable to a foreign brand car. I would love to go test drive something that is really worth while. Are any of the cheap ones comparable to a Honda Fit or toyota Yaris? There must be something that someone put some effort into trying to make it drive like it isnt from the 70’s.

I drove the Chery A3. Was slightly better but not that great. Hard to believe some of the design flaws for model for china. Did you notice that they have to put pedal extensions on the break pedal? It is too high for most Chinese girls with small feet. There foot goes right under it. Any other models you can think of?
