Chery Fulwin officially launched

The previous Chery Fulwin was Chery’s first car they ever produced. Based on a legally bought Seat Toldeo platform, which was essentially second hand goods from VW, Chery envisioned their car building future would be bright and set about looking for an engine for their new Toldeo. They settled on the outgoing Ford Escort engine from Ford UK, as Ford UK were then gearing up to produce the Mk1 Focus, that engine line was suddenly surplus to requirements, Chery snapped it and moved the whole lot to Wuhu.

Fast forward a decade, Chery are one of the biggest independent car makers in China with a vast array (some say too vast) of cars that they offer, they’ve also just set up their own sub brands (Reely, Riich and Karry) which will offer their own ‘premium vehicles.

The Fulwin2 is a world away from the stuffy Toldeo based first generation Fulwin. It’s more rounded, its a more petite offering, it’s basically a whole new car. The Fulwin2 was launched last night in Suzhou city, along with its pricing which will see it go against the Brilliance FRV, and other popular sub 80,000rmb hatchbacks.

The Fulwin2 is priced as following:

  • Base model – 52,800rmb
  • Standard – 56,800rmb
  • Luxury – 59,800rmb
  • Aristocracy – 61,800rmb

At the moment, the Fulwin2 is based on a 1.5L engine mated to a 5 speed manual, an automatic version is due to be launched in the next few months.

Chery have apparently built the Fulwin2 around Chery’s own “Four S Principle’ which is

  1. Safety (built to 4 star crash protection, and built with same safety specs as other higher end Chery cars)
  2. Sporty (1.5L ATECO engine, and also the overall design of the interior and exterior)
  3. Science (again, the engine with its fuel saving abilities. Also low level of interior noise)
  4. Space – The Fulwin2 has a wheelbase of 2527mm and boasts a storage space of 450 litres, which can be extended to 1000L.

The Chery Fulwin2 is the latest small hatchback to roll out of Wuhu, and is up against some tough competition in a market that is already read hot. Competition not only comes from other domestic products, but also from foreign cars such as the Ford Fiesta, Mazda2, Chevrolet Aveo, and Hyundai Accent. Lets not forget that Chery also has some slight market overlap here with the Chery A3, and Chery A1 both of which are in a similar price bracket.

CHERY IS CONFUSING THE HECK OUT OF ME !

HERE . the A3 is the FRV competitor … this will be what ??

and its called Storm2 here .

  2. avatar CCT says:

Cheaper than the A3, on par with the current A5 but the current A5 is going to be swapped next year for a new generation which will be placed higher than the A3, and the price/quality will reflect this.

“The Chery Fulwin2 is the latest small hatchback to roll out…”
But this new Fengyun is not a hatchback; it’s a stubby back sedan. Please show the rear side view…..

  4. avatar dragin says:

Well I’m eating crow now….was wrong about that hatch. It’s a sedan with a hidden hatch :-) . Surprise!
But what about the hatchback version of Storm 2? Was it launched at the same time?
And how is this sedan, with hatch, going to do in rollover tests?
Can the C pillar handle the load?

  5. avatar Ed says:

such a smart design. sedan and a hatch all in one. looks great too.

  6. avatar CCT says:

The sedan is on its way, still in the testing phase I believe, so will be in production later this year or early next. Probably see it at Guangzhou!

Another car built on spare parts. So much to be excited about. New sheet metal on a jumbled bunch of parts. Way to engineer that car.

  8. avatar CCT says:

Does anything make you excited, Head Honcho? We know you like the Fit/Jazz, but what else?

  9. avatar lol says:

I guess he would be excited for this :

Kia Soul, Mini Coooper. But I like cars that drive well. I haven’t had the pleasure of driving a Chinese car that drives well. I like the swift but I haven’t driven one yet. I miss my MINI Cooper in the US and no I do not expect any Chinese designed car to drive that well but come on. It is not a good feeling to turn the steering wheel and feel the whole car want to go the opposite way because the suspension was not designed at all but just slapped in there.
