Brilliance and BMW to expand joint venture

12 November 2009 One Comment

Shenyang Brilliance and BMW are set to drastically expand their joint venture according to the Brilliance-BMW joint announcement this morning in the Great Hall of the People.

BMW are expected to expand their China line up with extra models, and are expected to invest a further 4 to 5 billion RMB into the joint venture.

The JV will see Brilliance expand one factory’s production to 75,000 vehicles, and at the same time build a second factory, with a view to building an engine factory in China.

Brilliance are keeping quiet on as to what new products that BMW will put into production in China, a new factory is expected to put lengthened models of the BMW 3 and 5 series into production, which will include the latest generation. The lengthened BMW 3 series is expected to be a China only model, due to Chinese demand for a three series with more leg room.

Whilst Brilliance have not confirmed what models will be going into production in China, the 1-Series BMW is a likely candidate, as is the BMW X3 SUV, which will deliver a model to compete against the growing segment of premium compact SUVs.

I suspect that the lengthened 3-series is in response to the A4L.
