MG6: Zeds dead baby, Zeds dead.

The MG6 was officially launched today with much fan fare, and was arguably the most anticipated launch of the entire car show. The MG6 will be the first Chinese car to go international with European production and sales to begin sometime towards between the middle and end of 2010 according to report and rumour alike. The new MG6 signals the end of the Zed range of MG cars, which means we may never actually get to see the MG3 ZR or the MG7 sports model, but perhaps it is best to leave past cars in the past where they belong, the future for MG looks to be very bright indeed.

MG had been awarded an impressive stand at the Guangzhou auto show, measuring 1300 square meters and in a separate hall away from its Roewe brother, which shows that SAIC are beginning to take the individuality of the MG brand seriously over its self thought up Roewe brand.

The production car doesn’t appear to have any major cosmetic changes since its first launch as a concept car earlier this year, although the lettering on the rear has changed from Nanjing MG to SAIC MG, indicating that SAIC are finally putting their mark on the marque after letting it seemingly fester for a year under their control. The new chrome logo for MG has also been officially aired, with mixed reactions in the traditional MG camp and those that see the MG logo change as a breath of fresh air and a new change for MG. The MG6 is powered by a 1.8L and a 1.8T engine derived from the Roewe 550, the 1.8L is good for 133bhp, whilst the turbo version is good for 160bhp.

    this is getting old…

the mini cooper doesn’t fit in this conversation BECAUSE it is imported. Don’t bitch about the high price tag when 50% of it is import duty. The reason why people buy them here is for social status. Regardless of the value for money, the fact that it’s expensive and rare makes it all the more interesting to local housewives with 2 cents in their heads and millions in their hubbies’ wallets. Same goes for ErNais, rich daddies’ girls, gold diggers, etc etc. Here is a woman’s car, or perhaps a showy young bachelor’s car, or a daddy’s boy.. I mean, u get the picture.

I would only really compare those cars that I made in China.

    • avatar Head Honcho says:

Which cars do you make in China?

      • avatar Ed says:

you are so arrogant and ignorant. That’s like saying everyone eats Mcdonalds in the States and they are all overweight. Are you mentally challenged or something?? by the way, LOTS of cars are made in China.

    • avatar Head Honcho says:

I get your picture and that is probably true in China. No one knows how to drive here anyway. I used to drive mine for autocross. I would take a Mini over an audi A4 or bmw 3 series any day.

What have Roewe come up with at Guangzhou? Anything about the 350?

    • avatar Windy says:

MG got all the attention, the 350 now has it’s debut at the Beijing show. They have the N1 again instead. MG just have the one orange car, despite having one of the biggest stands of all the manufactures!

admin: there’s a bug with ur mobile site. On my iPhone this thread has ed’s comment, but on the pc it doesn’t show

  5. avatar Juls says:

ahhh Ed, I don’t need to try a car when its not as reliable as the next jap or euro one for a similar price. I suppose you own a 550? To be fair with, and in spite of your harsh 12yo attitude towards strangers you don’t know, such as me and honcho, I’ll give you that: if I was chinese, like you I guess, I would still have considered a 550, coz for a Chinese car its pretty nice.

Oh an yeah, am petty sure the 550 engine is based on the old rover Kseries, which development dates back to early 90′s. The chassis is a shortened version of the rover 75, so same bag. The rest (mostly the interior electronics) is new, to some extent. I think Ricardo did most of the engineering on that car, so that’s a plus I guess, but its still limited to what they had to start with.

So, can you prove me wrong or are you gonna start crying again?

    • avatar Windy says:

I’m sure that if you sit in the drivers seat and put your feet on the pedels you will find their design almost identical in position and operation to the Austin 7 but then every production car on sale today is based on that Austin 7 design, the first Nissans and first BMWs both paid Austin for the use of the IP. You present being based on something as a negative which it is not, use of a good design is good!

    • avatar Ed says:

So in your words, reliability is everything?? By the way, the engine contains new technology. SAIC would not put an engine over two decades old in a brand new car. Same with the chassis. So don’t assume you know everything or anything, for that matter, about the 550. I only have a “harsh attitude” to you and Head Honcho because you have shown me nothing for me to treat you any better.

      • avatar Head Honcho says:

Ed don’t act like you have ever been friendly. You have the most narrow minded attitude I have seen on here. Open your eyes and I will have no problem with you. There is so much potential with the Chinese car brands but they aren’t to the point of impressing anyone with anything other than volume numbers. Soon there will be products from them that everyone looks at and say why didn’t I think of that. As of now they have all stuck with using old chasis and copying other companies cars. Respect for a company comes when they do something creative and new for me. I will have no problem thinking differently of any of them when they hit that point.

      • avatar Juls says:

Reliablity is definitely a plus. Also, one major complaint from owners was that on top of recurrent problems, the 4S shops were really poor on servicing. Remember, it’s still a new company.

  6. avatar Juls says:

ahhh ok I see how the thread works. the comments I thought were missing just happened to be higher above linked to other comments. Sorry for my noobness

  7. avatar juls says:

Good heavens u ppl know how to be irrelevant. LOL, the position of the pedals?? Are u freaking dumb? I don’t even know if its worth replying to this…. Think for one second: what might be different between a chassis , drivetrain and engine from the early 90′s and those from today?

  8. avatar Juls says:

I wasn’t talking about the MG6 in particular, just making assumptions based on my knowledge of the 550. I’ve looked enough in the development story of the 550 to know that the chassis is that of the rover 75 and the engine is from the K series. Please find proof of the contrary and come back to me when you have it. Thanks.

  9. avatar Head Honcho says:

    CCT,
It would be great if comments replied to another comment were offset of the column or something. Realy hard to follow comments in here. If maybe they were indented if they were replies it should help a little. I don’t know how much work that is for you but just a idea. I have seen it on other websites and they seem to be pretty easy to follow.

    • avatar CCT says:

Ill look at other reply to comment functions on other websites and put something online in late January. Thanks for the tip.

  10. avatar Juls says:

I rather have the quoting system: every comment goes at the bottom if the thread in order and u can address someone in particular by quoting their text. The quoted text is offset in grey

  11. avatar Roewe owner says:

Okay I’ve owned a Roewe 550 for a year now. It’s a custom order of black on black. First let me tell you that I’m a Canadian male living in China. I’ve been driving for 30 years and I’ve owned up to 35 different cars. I even design Jeeps for offroad competitions. I know cars, period.
I’ve been reading a lot of inuendo about the Roewe 550. Let me tell you the facts about my car. The car is not based on the 75 chassis it’s an all new chassis, 4 wheel independent suspension, 4 wheel brakes. It corners really well for a mid size four door car. IT”S NOT A SPORTS CAR! It has every 3 letter acronym you can think of i.e. ABS … The paint and finish are flawless, the interior is better than a BMW 3 series. Everything is tight and no squeals or rattles, This is of a years use now. The things that have gone wrong on my car are , frayed wire to driver seat, and coolant smell from the engine compartment. The stereo sounds great but it has a lot of nagging problems. That’s all that wrong with my car in one year. The service is the best I’ve ever had. I just take my car in no appointment and it’s fixed within a day/or couple of hours, the car is washed for me and all fluids topped off, with a complete check of tire pressures and all vidal components. Free of charge. In fact when I bought the car I have 3 years free oil changes and filters including oil, gas and air. Beat that the big 3.
The car is not fast it does have turbo lag. Mine is the 1.8T 550D series. The tranny is the trip tronic. Great tranny. Love the paddle shifters. Love driving in sports mode and shifting away up and down. Better than using a manual esp. with the traffic here in Beijing. With proper use of the tranny you can rock this car in all types of road conditons. It even has winter mode for those days of snow on the road. It actually works well.
I bought this car because cars in china are crazy expensive, not like back in Canada where cars are so much cheaper. I figure that I’ve got great value for the money here. Would I recomend this car. YES. I will buy the N1 for my wife when that comes out.
