BYD king of the charts in November sales
November sales figures came out yesterday and give the BYD F3 the top slot. Not bad for a company that is only a couple of years old and is showing the top manufacturers how to sell and market cars in China:
- BYD F3 – 32,000
- Buick Excelle – 22,200
- Hyundai Elantra – 21,000
- VW Jetta – 20,500
- Honda Accord – 17,200
- Chery QQ – 17,000
- VW Lavida – 15,400
- Toyota Camry – 15,100
- Xia Li N3 – 15,100
- VW Sonata – 15,000
The above ten cars accounted for 25% of total sales in November alone, and will probably be even more during the hot car buying months of December and January.

Are they doing something besides just having a way lower price? I could be missing out on some special marketing since I don’t read Chinese but it seems unlikely.
Please, we’ve talked about this at length on this forum: the F3 is a successful car in this market because:
A) it’s a cheap Sedan. The symbol of owning a car is really accomplished here by owning a Sedan.
B) it looks decent and drives decent because it’s a knock off of the old generation Toyoto Corolla. Just watch out for that car and check how many owners actually replace the full badging with the Toyoto logo, brand name and Corolla badge.
C) the Chinese consumer doesnt care about business ethics. He wants a cheaper Corolla, he gets one at a discount. It doesnt matter that it doesnt drive as well, isnt as safe etc… it does the basic job.
Finally note that point B) allows BYD to save a ton on development costs.
And the conversation goes on…
No authors listed on the articles anymore. Imagine that.
Whoa, look at #10 on the sales chart……….a BRAND NEW MODEL and I never even heard of it……..the VW Sonata! Anyone got any pics?
It’s probably VW Sontana.
Santana?
Uh……….YES it is the Santana (the Hyundai Sonata is not a top 10 selling car)- I guess my dry sense of humor needs more work.
OK, I actually have a few serious comments……..first the F3. As with the Jetta and Santana (#4 and #10 on the list), the sales data does not give a breakdown of individual sales vs. fleet sales – in other words I’m talking about TAXI SALES. The F3 is becoming increasingly popular as a choice for taxi fleets – it’s relatively reliable and the basic model is over 10,000 rmb cheaper than the Jetta – and over 20,000 rmb cheaper than the Santana. I’ve been in F3 taxis in Shenzhen, Guilin and Guangzhou…..not much different than being in a older Corolla. It’s quiet enough, takes bumps and potholes well and has the room of a Santana – not a bad choice for taxi use when you think about it. I can easily see more and more taxi companies across China thinking “hmmmm…..I can save money AND upgrade my taxi fleet with the F3 – why not?” VW is already planning on stopping production of the old Jetta and Santana anyway by 2011 or 2012, so yet another reason for taxi companies to consider upgrading their fleets to a different car (like the F3). One more surprise on the list – the Xiali N3? Really?? I would have thought the BYD F0 would have been up there……they’re like rabbbits – every time you look there’s more of them out there!!!
chery qq lmao
I’m considering buying a brand new BYD F3R, can anybody advise me how good they are?
Philippe
They are a great choice if you want a reliable, cheap, and efficient small car. It’s quiet, durable, and very fuel efficient. But, if you are looking for a sports/performance vehicle, then you should look away.
