Chery Riich G5 launched!

Chery’s Riich G5 is the top of the line flagship model from Chery, and is Chery’s attempt at taking the fight to the Japanese controlled mid size sedan segment.

The first model to come down the line is carrying Chery’s home built 2.0T engine. The G5 measures an impressive (LxWxH) 4717/1794/1473 and has a wheel base of 2700mm. Chery is reportedly aiming this car squarely at the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Hyundai Sonata with a high class product, but undermining them in price as the above mentioned cars are in the 200,000rmb and rising price segment.

The 2.0T engine from Chery’s ATECO line up is no slouch, it is capable of producing 125kw/170bhp, and 235Nm of torque at 1900rpm. This is Chery’s first turbo engine to make it to production, and it appears to be getting off to a good start judging by the statistics.

Pricing is from 142,800rmb for the 2.0T 6 speed manual, 156,800rmb for the 6 speed manual elite model, and the luxury 5 speed auto will come in at 179.800rmb.

nice start .. but i hope it accelerates better than all of chery products which are ridiculous slow ! ( a 1.6 car taking 18 seconds to reach 100 km/h ) !

and the interior looked great in the concept we say a year or two before .. but now its looks a bit outdated to me.

Merry Christmas Ashley (your inbox is full, so I have posted here–apologies).

I’ve written a book on life in China, raising a family, and doing all the things we expats do that are normal to us but extroardinary to others back home. Just editing now and hoping to publish in the spring.

I have a chapter on driving in China. Getting the license, hitting a cyclist, insurance scams, etc. I thought you and your readers might be interested and also wondered if you would be so kind as to offer a one or two sentence promo blurb that could be put on the back cover or inside along the lines of ” ‘a superb account of driving on the streets in China’–China Car Times” type of thing.
Thanks in advance and for all the helpful info on your website. It’s been a go-to reference for me and many of my friends in Dalian.

I couldn’t attach the chapter (your inbox was too full) but it can be viewed here:

the tail lights were copied from th echrysler 300C, and the headlights from the Hyundai Sonata. As for the rest of the body, Chery’s designers took inspiration from a pile of shit.

looks like a clone of the skoda octavia

  9. avatar Head Honcho says:

I don’t see a skoda in it. The trunk reminds me of the Dodge Neon though. Just glad they didn’t go with the ugly Neon front end.

I am curious about the turbos. Are they buying a turbo unit from someone and adding it to one of their engines or did they really design their own turbo? Turbo engines have always had shorter life spans. Toyotas in the 90′s with turbos were pretty unreliable.

I agree with tomson. Calling a car ‘Riich’ is quite pretentious. I think chinese marques must first decide which type of car they wish to market in order to promote brand recognition and loyalty, rather than offering both budget and ‘luxurious’ cars. 125 kW and 235 Nm from a 2.0L turbocharged engine is nothing to boast about. Remember, these are peak figures, taken after the turbo has reached peak boost. The Riich was beaten around the Nurburgring by the German built Opel Corsa supermini, quipped with a 1.6 litre turbocharged engine that developed 141 kW. The ‘Riich’ is not a good car by any means. Judging by the quality of other Chinese cars, the ‘Riich’ will be plagued by reliability issues. The first Chinese car to be imported into Europe, the JiangLing Landwind scored zero out of five in an ADAC safety test (source – http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/article567349.ece).

I find it laughable that these manufacturers will even attempt at competing with obviously superior European and Japanese cars from other marques, and put the lives of passengers at risk simply to save money. With respect to Q’s comment, I think you’ll find the names ‘Mustang’ and ‘Corvette’ much less pretentious and vulgar than the unsuccessfully aspirational ‘Riich’.

    FROM ITALY .
Buon Natale e felice anno nuovo 2011!
