Dongfeng Peugeot 408 to launch tonight!
The Dongfeng built Pegeuot 408 is set to launch tonight in China with a series of four models, pricing is also expected to be around 120,000rmb which puts it squarely against the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, and also Roewe 550 in a hotly contested segment.
This is the first mid size sedan from Peugeot since the Peugeot 504, which was built in a disastrous partnership with Guangzhou automobile at the turn of the century. The Chinese built 408 will be coming with the choice of 1.6 and 2.0L engines and also manual/automatic gearboxes. Pricing is expected to be as follows: 1.6 manual standard 121,900rmb, 2.0 manual standard 129,900rmb, 2.0T automatic standard 141,900rmb, and the 2.0T Prestige model will cost 169,999rmb.

Wow!
This must be the first Peugeot to debut in China. I have not seen the 408 yet in Europe, we still have the rather lackluster 407. Looks great, and the price must be very competitive.
And you won’t see the 408 in Europe. The 407 will be replaced by the 508. 508, because it will move up the scale to also replace the aging (but still gorgeous) 607.
The 408 in China meanwhile is actually a European 308 with a butt. 408, because the 307 sedan will still be made there, so to position it higher in the market the didn’t choose 308 sedan as a name.
It’s pretty good-looking, but the trunk looks unfortunately slapped on.
Thanks for clearing this up. I didn’t believe my coworker yesterday when he told me about the pricing for the 408, as I assumed it was going to be a replacement for the 407. But if the 408 is really just a lengthened 308 for the Chinese market, then it all makes sense.
Also, the 2.0T does look interesting.
Ok, I just checked and this 408 is quite large!
Dimensions are 4680*1815*1525, with a wheelbase of 2710mm! This is a lot larger than the Focus, and the other cars in that class.
However, I can find no indication that the 2.0L is “T”.
ok.. i got it now.. i couldn’t believe it when china’s gonna roll out 408 way before everyone.. it looks kinda weird.
now that i know it’s a lengthened 308, it make sense
