Toyota to start China marketing campaign to woo Chinese drivers

According to Bloomberg, but is it all a little too late now that the damage has been done?

March 5 (Bloomberg) — Toyota Motor Corp., the world’s biggest carmaker, will begin a marketing campaign in China today to lure customers amid the company’s recent recalls, the Wall Street Journal said.

The promotion, which runs through the end of the month, will include no-interest loans, free vehicle insurance and fuel, and service plans, the Journal said, citing Toyota’s Beijing- based spokesman Hitoshi Yokoyama. Toyota’s joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group Co. is also extending current promotions for Camry sedans and Yaris subcompacts to the end of the month, the report said.

Yokoyama couldn’t immediately be reached for comment at his office or on his mobile phone.

The campaign follows company president Akio Toyoda’s visit to China this week to apologize for global recalls of more than 8 million vehicles with defects linked to unintended acceleration. Toyota has recalled 75,552 RAV4 sport-utility vehicles in China due to faulty gas pedals.

It’s way too little, and way too late.

Seems to be working in the US. I was at a Toyota dealership today and every salesman was busy. People are willing to risk whether or not the problems are fixed for 0% financing and heavy discounts. It makes Toyotas inline price wise with all the other cars that are usually cheaper.

China won’t be any different.

I can’t believe people would be that dumb. I wouldn’t choose a Toyota no matter what you offer me, plus, how do I know if all the problems have been fixed.

It sounds like they aren’t all fixed or people are making claims for attention. I would take a toyota over a BYD any day of the week even with sticking gas pedals. But over a Chinese car would be the only thing I would take it over.

In this age of outsourcing, these problems could’ve happened to any global auto manufacturer. What’s hurting Toyota now is their (mis)handling of the issue.

Yeah I agree. They are blowing it. They have been hiding the data their cars record 5 seconds before accidents and 2 seconds after. Scratching off data on the brakes and gas pedals. Just making everyone wonder wha they are hiding.

You can take your Toyota and crash when the pedals fail, while I will be driving my Chinese car.

Your Chinese car that the brakes don’t work anyway. I am just happy to know the car isn’t going to collapse on itself.

Ed, just curious, how will you drive your Chinese car in Canada?
