BYD releases official S6 SUV pictures

S6 SUV official 300x225 BYD releases official S6 SUV picturesPrior to the Beijing Auto Show, BYD have released official pictures of their first SUV, the S6. Spy pictures of the SUV were posted to CCT earlier this week which quickly became a hot topic.

The S6 was reportedly in development for three years and will come packed with technology, such as keyless entry, anti theft, multi-language DVD and GPS systems, reversing cameras, parking assist system and heated wing mirrors and sunroof to clear the frost on cold mornings.

The SUV itself does look rather good, and if it is set to be around 100,000rmb it will no doubt be as popular as its BYD F3 model that stole the show in the compact car segment. Engines for the S6 are likely to be a choice of 1.8, 2.0, and 2.4L models.

The Chinese market takes two steps forward, and five steps back.

How does BYD expect anyone to take them seriously with this CLONE?

  2. avatar Bilbo says:

a rip off of a Lexus, with a slightly different grill and lights………still a copy of a posh Toyota, with the wheel arch styling from a Mitsubishi Endeavour

  3. avatar Paul says:

    “Clone of what”??????

Your glasses must still be in the mail.

    • avatar Analyst says:

You seem to be not know the meaning of the word “clone.” If it’s a clone, there should be a car it’s “cloning” from and it should look as similar as possible to said car.

So, what car does the S6 clone from?
      BYD S6

      • avatar Analyst says:

And this is the Lexus RX. You can’t tell me with a straight face that it’s a clone. The rear is slightly different, the front adn the interior are totally different.

The BYD F3 is a Toyota Corolla Clone. The BYD F0 is a Toyota Aygo clone. This car, while resembling the RX, is not a direct clone by any means. And this is a step in the right direction from BYD.

        • avatar joninchina says:

Thank you analyst, you have saved me the time of trying to explain to these nimrods once again how the S6 ISN’T a CLONE!!! I’ve decided to come up with the ULTIMATE COMPARISON – every car looks like every car. They all have 4 wheels, a steering wheel, at least 2 doors and they ALL have a engine……and I’m going to sue EVERY AUTO MANUFACTURER IN THE WORLD for massive deception and plagarism!! :)

OK, back to reality…….did I miss something along the way? Is it now ‘de riguer’ to instantly compare, criticize and bash EVERY NEW CAR coming from China now? When something like the F0 and F3 come along, fine – we’ll bash the hell out of them (analyst is right of course – these cars ARE clones). The S6 does NOT deserve this kind of criticism, and it’s getting to be disgusting that people won’t just back off and give BYD a LITTLE bit of credit here.

        • avatar Head Honcho says:

Joininchina. You are right people won’t back off and give a company credit when they have pretty recently copied a car. Wait until they get to the US. People will be talking about them being a copying company for many years and it will take a long time for anyone to forget and the brand really take off. That is why it isn’t worth starting a company like that anywhere other than China or third world car markets. Takes too long to recover your reputation.

        • avatar Fiziks says:

I don’t think the main issue would be a copied design. This car looks different enough that an average Joe would not call it a clone. So does the E6 BYD is planning to sell in the US. I only see them having a problem trying to sell the Corolla clone.

The main concern would be reliability and quality (quality might be overlooked if the price is right). And since China has been a scapegoat for everything here, a Chinese product will be received with a lot more distrust than anything else. So they better have their sh!t together.

        • avatar Ed says:

Recently copied a car? LMAO What car? Which model? and what does it have to do with this? You don’t need to bring your personal bias into this. This car is NOT a clone.

        • avatar Ed says:

BYD has great quality and reliability, and the so-called “Corolla clone” (which has more than 80% of difference with the Toyota, by the way) is China’s top seller.

        • avatar Head Honcho says:

My bias. Ed get a life. So F0 and F3 are not recent cars anymore? What was it last year when it came out. Has to be this week to be recent for you? My response was to Joininchina. Read his post then mine. Then maybe you can understand. I never said this was a cloned car so direct your comments else wear.

        • avatar Ed says:

Actually, the F0 was launched in 2008, and the F3 was launched over a year ago, did you forget that we are living in 2010? If you think 2 years ago is recent, then why don’t you say you’ve “recently” bought a laptop 2 years ago? Why don’t you go read “recent” news from 2 years ago?

and personal bias is exactly right, if you are not biased, then how come I’ve never seen a compliment out of you? How come you always bring in other models when they have nothing to do with the actual posts?! China, the number one auto market in the world is a “third world market”?! and it isn’t worth starting a company that beat all other major automakers to produce a plug-in hybrid/dual mode vehicle in a “glorious and wonderful” market like the U.S.?! You are totally not biased.

        • avatar Head Honcho says:

I did make a compliment recently. About the looks of one of the cars. Electric is slow to the US because it still can not be used in most areas. Many Americans like myself are not willing to give up the ability to drive 500 miles in a day either without recharging. Not everyone but many people in the US travel distance by car. It happens in China too but less. People tend to take train or bus for long distance. I personally am always taking too much with me to travel that way.

Sorry but a 2 year old car is not that old. That is recent. Do you go buy a new car every 6 months? F0 and F3 are both very recent cars. I don’t think you will find too many people backing you up on that one.

        • avatar Ed says:

So you can say you’ve “recently” bought a car 2 years ago? I’m sure everybody will back you up on this one.

That is the problem, even with all the talks going on about the environment, so many ignorant people still don’t care. Do they not realize that they will die too? 15 minutes of charging after driving 300kms is not that much. I do not know anyone that drives 500kms every single day, so it won’t be a problem for most people, plus, you will probably have to fill up your tank (depends) after 500 miles. Most cars get under 40mpg, and taking a 15 minute break on your trip for the environment is nothing.

        • avatar Head Honcho says:

          Ed,
Many people believe that technology has been available for years and the oil companies are blocking it being released. It doesn’t make sense that cars are so much worse in gas mileage that back in the 70s and 80s. Early 90s friends of mine were driving the Geo Metro which was a Daihatsu or Korean car. I can’t remember but it got 55mpg and now the Toyota prius barely gets that. My parents Toyota that was a 1972 got over 40mpg. Yeah they changed emission rules but you can’t tell me that couldn’t keep up with that in technology to keep the gas mileage the same. The new Honda CR-Z gets the same gas mileage the old CRV got but they had to make it a hybrid to do it. Making it a hybrid should have improved. The whole hybrid scene is kind of a joke at this point. Once they surpass what old cars could do then it will be worth while. Yeah I am sceptic on a full electric. Too early for them to reliable it seems but time will tell. Look at the tesla. They could even put it through the track on top gear without it going dead on them.

        • avatar Ed says:

This is why we need electric vehicles, skeptical or not, it’s a good start, at least, and will improve in time.

  4. avatar 2o6 says:

They don’t deserve credit because it’s clearly a Lexus.

  5. avatar 2o6 says:

It’s an RX with a distorted face.

Sad, because Chery, Brilliance, and others are creating unique designs. This RX clone is appalling.

  6. avatar Buddhahead says:

Wow, a Lexus for the price of a Kia? Maybe BYD got the tooling from Toyota cheap so Toyota could pay it’s ‘runaway’ brake law suits? Was Toyota trying to copy Audi? BYD just bought a Japanese die company so they could stamp out cars. Can’t wait to see what happens. Maybe a Japanese Zero? Have you noticed that the best selling GM car in China is a tiny van copied from another Chinese company? Heaven forbid! I think all cars are starting to look the same. Things like the diamond shaped tail light first ‘invented’ by Mercedes, looks like a lots of people copied that. Car companies try to design cars to sell not to be unique designs ala the Edsel, Studebaker, etc.(marketing lesson to be learned?) Looks to me that the car company that listens to its customers doesn’t try to be unique but gives the customer what they like. I think car companies should call their new models ‘Generic’ then everybody would be happy. Ooops, looks like they already have them—they’re called ‘world cars’, all parts interchangeable no matter who makes it.

For those of you interested in pictures of Chinese cars(excuse me, clones), try:

  8. avatar Daewoo-Chevrolet says:

The length, width and wheelbase are exactly the same as the previous Lexus RX/Toyota Harrier: http://i3.sinaimg.cn/qc/2009/1229/2009122993446.jpg
Of course this is a clone. Coincidence doesn’t exist in the Chinese auto industry.

    • avatar Head Honcho says:

Is the car actually the dimensions they are posting them to be? It is possible they copied the dimensions from Lexus but they are actually different and will update them when they release the car. You see that very often here in China on all products.

  9. avatar V8 says:

The rear end is pure renault koleos! nice one BYD

  10. avatar Daewoo-Chevrolet says:

The real dimensions differ a bit from the Lexus RX: Length 4810 × width 1855 × heigth 1680 mm

  11. avatar I laughed says:

Okay, so Chrysler 300 “borrows” the design clues from the Rolls Royce? They don’t look a like at all! But as for the S6, everyone could easily recognize it as a “clone” from the previous Lexus RX. If so, what do you expect it will do if S6 is selling in other countries? I personally will prefer a “second hand” RX, which it could be more reliable than first hand S6.

BTW, I think Ed you are the one who need to have your eyes checked.

  12. avatar Murk says:

This is an original BYD design and not a clone or copycat.
