MG2: Rendered speculation or final car?

Pictures of a future MG2 have been released onto the internet earlier today, sparking rumors of possible engine combinations for the MG2 which will officially be on show at the Beijing Car Show later this month and will probably go into production over the summer.

The Roewe 350 went into production last month at the previous Nanjing-MG factory ahead of its launch later this month where it is expected to sell very well against other competitors both domestic and foreign.

Prior to the takeover of Nanjing MG, SAIC were busy working on their own AO class car which was codenamed S261, later it was renamed the ZP11 and was given the MG logo, making it the MG2 as we see above. The A-Pillar looks quite similar to the Skoda Fabia, whilst the rear C pillar is similar in style to the Suzuki Swifts rear end. The front end is certainly MG’s style from the new MG6.

The MG2 does look very similar to the Fiat Punto in these pictures, which might indicate some Punto genes within its DNA, there were a series of unmarked Fiat Puntos testing near SAIC facilities late last year which first sparked rumors of the MG2 being Punto based.

Engine power will initially come from a 1.5T producing 78Kw/6000rpm and 135Nm of torque at 4000rpm, which will make it quite a potent little car. Another 1.3L engine is also in development, as the MG3 SW’s 1.4L block is considered too old to be taken seriously in any new car. A 5 speed manual and also a new style Multimode stepless automatic box will be made available for the MG2, but we wont see any DCT tech on this car according to the Chinese press.

This small car is the spiritual successor to the legendary MG Metro in 90′, and as a better look to CityRover in 2000′

  2. avatar Patrick says:

CityRover? The car that never came to Holland.

  3. avatar arnau says:

The Rover and MG Metro was the entry level to MG Rover Group, and the cityRover was in the same segment, that of the urban cars (3m70)

  4. avatar Bilbo says:

but the City Rover wasn’t a Rover, it was a Tata wih a Rover badge sold at far to high a price

    looks alright

Wow a Chinese car that isn’t a blatent rip off! Probably due to the design input from the ex Rover staff they hired.

What have you been doing for the last month? Do you think everything posted here are rip-offs? So far you’ve seen one(!) car out of the 60-70 posted that isn’t a rip off, I’m impressed.
This little car looks great, by the way.

      • avatar Bilbo says:

The vast majority are either blatant copies or a mish mash of other cars……..mainly Toyota’s and then there is the Fiat Panda, sorry I meant the unique Great Wall that is in no way a rip off of a Panda. Or the Scion xB that Great Wall copied………..there were even photo’s on this site of xB’s in the Great Wall factory.

        • avatar Ed says:

So I guess that means ALL Chinese cars are rip-offs? Great Wall has more original cars in its lineup than designs that resemble others, and again, how unique can you get nowadays without going overboard? Almost every car out there resembles one or more design(s) from different manufacturers. The vast majority of Chinese cars are NOT copies/rip-offs.

    any ideas of prices?

The CityRover was nothing but a rebadged Tata Indica, first generation. No Rover genes there.

The Rover engineers who worked in India to Roverise it might disgaree, especially the mark II (black facia) version which came over mainly post-receivership. It would have had more Rover genes if MGR management had listened to what their engineers wanted to do and got their priorities right. It would possibly have made more sense badged as an Austin. The Indica is quite similar to the Fiat Palio – same Italian design house – so a Fiat link on the MG2 seems quite ironic.

Spot on with this write-up, I really assume this web site wants far more consideration. I’ll probably be again to read way more, thanks for that info.
