MG6 gets another rave review in the UK

The MG6 just cant stop making friends in the UK, first it was Autocar that loved it, and now it is The Mirror newspaper that is giving it some love:

A pleasant surprise is the only way to describe my drive in the new MG6.

As you know, I’m no fan of Chinese metal, and MG’s past build quality was never world-class. But their new 1.8-litre turbo-charged front-wheel drive family hatch is remarkably beguiling.

Especially since my test car was a Chinese-built engineering prototype with a cameraman, director and PR bloke on board. Handsome and commodious, it’s about the same size as a Skoda Octavia, does 60 in 8.5 seconds and can run all the way to 130.

The suspension’s a bit hard for UK roads (that’ll be softened before launch), but here’s the thing.

The MG6 handles, grips and corners almost as well as a Ford Focus. And that’s the equivalent of a motoring knighthood. To carp about a few untidy edges in the interior would be unfair – the solidity of switches, stalks and controls is commendable.

It’s due on sale later this year, the vast MG factory is ready to go using the old Rover 75 production line, and there’s a cheery buzz of excitement at the Longbridge works.

If Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation and MG Motor UK can sort the ride, detail the cabin and price the MG6 at less than fifteen grand, I reckon they’ll easily sell every one they make.

And for Birmingham and the West Midlands, the renaissance of MG can’t come soon enough.

All very well, but there’s no Turbo Diesel yet. I know not everyone loves a diesel, but with over 50% of Euro cars being diesel and indeed in this class of car over 75% being diesel then they are missing a trick. But as we all know everyone has to start somewhere.

I hope it does succeed but to do so it will need to be priced competitively and be of equal build quality as more expensive competition.

Personally I’d have an Octavia though

I’d take this anyday over a Octavia. Seems like a very decent car.

    • avatar CCT says:

It is a very nice car, and the 0-100 speed is not shabby at all plus it has a huge boot. Its biggest drawback is the price tag!

    • avatar Bilbo says:

Why? The Octavia is far more modern, has an up to date engine range, has VW build quality.

      • avatar Ed says:

But this has more personality, is more fun to drive/handle, and gives a better overall experience (imo). I don’t think this is any less modern than an Octavia.

        • avatar Bilbo says:

The Octavia is basd on the Golf/TT platform and having owned an Octavia vRS I seriously doubt the MG6 is more fun/better handling. The MG6 design is fairly modern but nothing outstanding and the engines are refreshed K series we are long in the tooth.

        • avatar Ed says:

          I prefer the MG6 more.

I’d agree…the Octavia is a fantastic car and a hidden gem. Maybe I’m biased having owned one until recently. Sold for another Skoda before someone asks.

Trying to sell a large car in Europe with no diesel engine will be a disaster.

Groups of people here in the US watch the progress of SAIC-MG with intense interest, and I’m sure that CCT realizes that. We wish them the best in their European launch, and hope that continued success will see the MG brand back here in a few years.
I’d love to drive a new MG again while I’m still young enough to really enjoy it. In the meantime, enjoy all the SAIC/Roewe/MG
    articles that you bring us.

It seems like a decent enough car, but I hope SAIC are listening to some of the comments coming out of the UK regarding the styling. Unlike the MG Zero concept which people seem to love for it’s flash styling, the 6 looks too conservative and too much like the Nissan Primera.

In other words it’s a good car but a little bit dull and out of keeping with MG’s brand values.

    • avatar santos palisander says:

I couldn’t agree more. I drove MG sedans in the past that were not style leaders, but in today’s market, if your going to do something as stylish as the Zero, you had better spread that DNA throughout the model range. While the MG brand has a past, they’re really selling to a whole new generation.
