FAW-Mazda to get upgraded to JV status?
Unknown to many, the partnership with FAW and Mazda is not actually a joint venture but rather FAW licensing the rights to produce Mazda vehicles and use Mazda logos to promote the vehicles in China. In a recent months Mazda and FAW have been eager to expand their partnership and are reportedly planning to lift their partnership to JV status to introduce an expanding line up into China.
Chang’an Mazda which is splitting its time between ChangAn’s other JV partners of Ford, Volvo, and Suzuki as well as ChangAn’s own brands of Chang’An Motors, Hefei Motors and Changhe Motors, which may have slowed down Mazda’s development in the Chinese marketplace

Mazda’s ball and chain was not so much Chang’an as it was Ford itself. They argued over the Mazda 3, and production got suspended for 7 months. They argued over China R&D and over suppliers. But now Ford has cut Mazda some slack and so it can go about enhancing its promising ventures with Chang’an, FAW Changchun and FAW Hainan-Haima.
Mazda has such great body designers (as compared to Toyota for example)that it should do just fine.
