Geely Gleagle IG to be cheaper than Tata Nano

geelyig Geely Gleagle IG to be cheaper than Tata Nano

According to Chinese automotive media reports, the forthcoming Geely Gleagle IG mini car is going to be priced lower than the worlds cheapest car, the Tata Nano.

The Geely IG will go on the market in 2012 in China first, and will be sold worldwide eventually. The opening price is set to be from $2,250USD whereas the Tata Nano is priced from $2,700USD to $3,800USD.
It’s unclear if the Geely Gleagle IG will be packing its super cool doors into the production door, but it is likely to be a solid metal vehicle, unlike the Nano which is a plastic bodied affair.

half baked info, NANO is NOT a plastic body affair. Huh!

за такие деньги я бы его купил в но уверен что у нас в украине он будет стоить не меньше 6000$

Has anyone told Geely that “Gleagle” sounds ridiculous in English?

    • avatar Ed says:

Has anyone told you that so does Dodge, Neon, Daihatsu Materia, Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, Mazda Bongo Friendee, Ford Ka, and Bugatti? Ridiculous names are everywhere, some even come from American auto manufacturers. A lot of the times people don’t notice it because they are used to the names.

      • avatar 2o6 says:

None of those sound bad in English. Neon and Dodge are both English words. (Neon is an atomic element)

      • avatar bilbo says:

Rolls – Royce are the names of the originators of the company, same with Bugatti. Ka is the creation of a marketing idiot but doesn’t sound stupid.

If you want stupid sounding English then checkout http://www.engrish.com/category/chinglish/

        • avatar Ed says:

I don’t care how they originated, they all sound stupid/ridiculous. Gleagle is not bad compared to them. Phantom Drophead Coupe?! Dodge? Neon? Bongo Friendee? Ka?

        • avatar Bilbo says:

Gleagle isn’t even a real word…………man you are working hard for your 50c.

Oh and how can this design be so different from the norm yet its cheap, I thought this sort of thing wasn’t possible and thats why there are so many Toyota copies being made in China?

        • avatar Ed says:

Your reply is so senseless that it isn’t even worth replying to. You must be working for the CIA?

I never said it was impossible to be innovative, and this has nothing to do with the GWM C30, besides, this is Geely, not Toyota, or Hyundai.

So you think Ka and Bongo Friendee are real words? You think Dodge is a good name for a car company?

At least the Chinese can grasp some sort of foreign language. I highly doubt a significant fraction of the American population knows a second language.

        • avatar bilbo says:

@Analyst Not being American I have a grasp of at least 3 languages

@Ed you defended a bland boring design by GWM by saying that it was cheap and cheap cars cannot be innovative……have some consistency to your arguement.

Dodge – founded by the Dodge Brothers, why not choose your family name when setting up a company over 100 years ago?

        • avatar Ed says:

This has nothing to do with the C30′s design. Don’t go to another topic just because you don’t have anything to say. There are PLENTY of names ten thousand times more ridiculous than Gleagle (which stands for Global Eagle), like Dodge, for example. There are many explanations to why the company/model was named that way, so if you can name a company Dodge, then I don’t see anything wrong with Global Eagle.

        • avatar 2o6 says:

          Glegale sounds awkward in English.

        • avatar Head Honcho says:

I know plenty of Chinese that only speak Chinese. More than I know Chinese that speak a second language by far.

        • avatar bilbo says:

@Ed – yes it does, you said that a cheap car cannot be an innovative design on the story about the C30 yet on this thread you changed your opinion.

Agreed that Global Eagle sounds fine however Gleagle sounds ridiculous. As does Chery and Roewe.

        • avatar Ed says:

Bugatti and Lamborghini also sound ridiculous. It doesn’t matter. I NEVER said it was impossible to be innovative. I said it will likely cost more, because with a “boring” design, you already have references. Read my comments carefully before you reply.

        • avatar bilbo says:

Anyone who thinks Bugatti and Lamborgini sound ridiculous has lost an credibility, two of the most iconic names in automotive history named after their creators………or the idea of a chinese marketing department, which is the more ridiculous?

        • avatar Analyst says:

Bugatti and Lamborghini sound better to you because

          A) You recognize them as iconic names in automotive history.
          B) They stem from a Western language.

Who’s to say they don’t, in fact, sound ridiculous to a Chinese or Asian person without knowledge of the auto industry?

        • avatar Ed says:

Exactly. Gleagle doesn’t sound bad to me. The world does not only consist of you or Westerners, we all have different tastes, so there is really, no such thing as a bad name.

        • avatar Head Honcho says:

I can think of plenty bad names. There is such things as a bad name.

        • avatar bilbo says:

Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, Honda, Suzuki all Asian and all sound perfectly fine.

Toyota (or Toyoda), Honda & Suzuki all named after the founders I believe and not the product of marketing people

        • avatar Ed says:

That’s your opinion. You think Suzuki sounds fine, but I think Suzuki sounds horrible. But neither of us are to say whether it is a good or a bad name.

@HH, The names seem bad only to you, but I guarantee you that there are people who will think they are fine. There is no such thing as a bad name.

  4. avatar Ed says:

Such a nice car. I would buy it if even it cost 3 times that price. Way better looking than the Tata Nano. This is what I call a 超级洗具。 吉利 show 塔塔 who the boss is.

    Nano have 4 doors,

    Nano have 4 seats,

    this thing does not…

    • avatar Ed says:

      and your point is?

      • avatar kerem says:

        my point is;

this is no rival to Nano

        • avatar Ed says:

          LMAO.
The Geely IG has solar panels, the Nano does not.
The Geely is attractive, the Nano is not.
The Geely will have an electric version, the Nano will likely not.
The Geely has better quality, is cheaper, has more features, and 4 seats as well. So who says it can’t rival/beat the Nano?

    • avatar Analyst says:

What’s the deal with the Nano? I mean, what’s the fuss about?

Tata has been making the Nano since 2008. Up until now, around 28,000 units have been sold. Well, BYD sells 28,000 F3′s in a month.

Nano is a negligible factor in the auto market.

      • avatar Head Honcho says:

Do you mean Nano sales in China only?

        • avatar Analyst says:

No, I mean Nano sales in the world. Which basically means India.

I don’t think it’s sold in China anyways.

        • avatar Head Honcho says:

I thought I saw one in China. Looked like the same logo but I haven’t really paid attention to what they look like. I just remember the wheels are the same size as a kids toy wagon. I would have thought they sold way more than that.

        • avatar Ed says:

The Nano is so ugly, seriously. I don’t see anything good about it. By the way, I read that the model shown in Beijing this year does have 4 seats.

  7. avatar Head Honcho says:

I would have to sit in one and see if I even fit. Quite a few Chinese cars are not built for an average size foreigner. Most of the Chery cars you can’t even use the sun visors if you wish to still see out the front.

  8. avatar yankee2 says:

I’m all for very cheap cars, provided that they work and last well and are reliable. VW used to have one in the Beetle. When they re-invented that car, with the New Beetle, they left out 3 big things: the honesty (it LOOKS RWD, but is actually FWD), the simplicity and the low price; it isn’t even as cute as the old car was. The old, 60s Saabs were (good) like that, too. I LIKE the tiny 2 cyl vans I see in China and elsewhere, which cannot be bought in America. We NEED and want a good $3000 (new) vehicle in the US.

  9. avatar yankee2 says:

These cars level the playing field for all people everywhere, as much as a vehicle can…

  10. avatar yankee2 says:

So what if cheap cars are not everything thier more costly cousins are? To everyone who cannot afford a costly car (i.e. maybe a billion people, all over the world), they are a miracle! And for many others, who CAN afford, say, a BMW, they are a wise and economical choice.

Who would NOT rather use thier limited amounts of discretionary cash for education, travel, to free-up time for refined activities (art, music, literature, etc.), and/or for financial security (for example) for themselves and their children? Why spend every last penny on a more costly car, which doesn’t really DO much more than a costly version, and which in any case will be junk in 10 years (or less)?

We have to stop letting the capitalists convince us we need to give them ALL our limited incomes!

    • avatar Head Honcho says:

It is great that everyone should be able to afford a car. The problem then becomes are the cheap cars just putting that much more polution in the air because everyone can have a car. Not saying the cars polute anymore than others. Just that it will put that many more out on the road. Look at the subway and train system in Tokyo. Countries need to look more than direction than everyone in the world owning a car. Car sales ae good for the economy but not the world.

      • avatar Ed says:

The IG will have electric versions, and don’t you see the solar panels on the hood and roof? Most Chinese cars nowadays are more green than American ones. Plus, the engine displacement in the all gasoline version does not exceed 1.5l.

This is where China comes in, not only do they sell the IG for a cheap price, they also make them green. More car sales may cause more pollution, but there is no reason why the rich and the wealthy can own multiple cars while poorer people can have none.

        • avatar Head Honcho says:

          Ed,
Where does the power come from to charge an electric car. It still is poluting any way you look at it. Less than another car but put an extra million electric cars on the road and there will be a significant increase in pollution.

I understand your feelings on wealthy only owning cars in China. I am buying a car but I would prefer there was just subways everywhere. Driving in China is not relaxing at all. I have driven in the US since I was 16 and I have driven in Europe many times. It isn’t close to the same. You can get on a freeway and cruise in other countries and relax. It just isn’t a pleasant experience driving in China. But when you are paying over 100 rmb a day for taxi it makes sense to buy a car. Plus there are no taxis near my factory so I have to call an illegal taxi to get home. More subways and less cars is the way to go for China. Why buy a car if you can get along without it?

        • avatar Ed says:

I have no idea why poor people would want to buy a car, maybe it’s because everyone else have one, and they’ve never owned one before? Maybe it’s their dream? Maybe they’ve been craving a vehicle for years or even decades? They deserve the right to own a car if they want to, and at least manufacturers are trying to be more green, but, of course they are not going to get there in one night.

You can’t control what other people want, so the best hope you have is the government, and right now, the government is building more subways and high-speed trains.

        • avatar Head Honcho says:

Obviously everyone would like a car. It is the governments job to make it so not everyone needs a car. If it is too convenient to ride the subway why buy a car. It isn’t like people are going out driving for fun on the weekends here in China. Not many nice curvy mountain roads to enjoy. Subways are coming much too slow in China and the government is pushing car sales not public transportation.

        • avatar Ed says:

I wouldn’t call it much too slow when you compare it to the rest of the world. The Chinese are one of the fastest already. Plus, owning a car might provide people with more pleasure, since you cannot own a subway (unless you’re super rich).

        • avatar Head Honcho says:

It is always nice to be able to go anywhere you want. Waiting for the bus is never fun and in Southern China it rains so much which really makes it inconvenient. But owning a car is just a money pit here. Everyone I know has been in so many car accidents over the past year. Then back to taking taxis and buses while there car is being worked on for 1-2 weeks.

  11. avatar John says:

The IG will tank, because it only offers 2 seats. Someone who looks for a cheap transport, is definitely not looking for nice design, but for utility. Even the Nano pales against the micro busses in that respect. That’s why I believe the Wuling micro bus will kill the Nano in India, once they produce it there. The IG will be long forgotten by then.

    • avatar Ed says:

It has 3 seats, not 2. Check your facts before posting. Just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean it has to look like a Tata Nano. It CAN look better, way better.

      • avatar John says:

I didn’t say it looks like the Nano, I only said it has the same or less utility compared to a micro bus. In India (and in China) utility is key in the low cost segment.

  12. avatar 2o6 says:

Honestly, I think Geely should make the iG a solid “regular” car before branching out into a very shallow market.

    • avatar Head Honcho says:

You are right. To try and bring a car that can be respectable at the lowest price in the industry is an uphill fight. Cutting costs everywhere you can which will end up ruining the reputation of the car in the long run. Why go after a market that will lose you money and destroy your reputation. It is a no win situation for the company that does it.

  13. avatar SLAVA says:

    • avatar Ed says:

Really? The custom duties in Ukraine is that high? It’s kind of hard to believe the price will triple once (if) it does export to the Ukraine. But would a price of $6000 make it one of the cheapest cars available there?

  14. avatar SLAVA says:
