Beijing traffic on a good day

Despite the Chinese capitals appalling rush hour traffic, the thirst for cars in Beijing is still strong. In the first half of 2010 Beijing’s roads swelled with the influx of 340,000 new cars that were added to its mass maze of roads, the monthly addition of an average of 57,500 cars is bound to leave a lasting impression of Beijing’s automotive infrastructure.

The Beijing government is looking into methods to control the increase in cars, multiple methods are being suggested such as the auctioning of number plates in a method similar to Shanghai, increasing the price of fuel in the capital, increasing the cost of parking and also preventing families from buying second and third cars.

Interestingly, the number of cars added to Beijing’s roads in the first half of 2010 is greater than the entire number of cars in the nearby city of Shi Jia Zhuang.
