Chery produces next generation 800cc engine
Chery’s first 800cc engine was put into the lowest model of the Chery QQ, the 800cc engine was good for 52bhp which was enough to punt the little mini car around town in a relatively dignified manner.
Chery have now produced a second generation model of the 800cc engine which is promising improved power and improved economy around town thanks to improved DVVT technology. Torque has been improved to 85Nm, whilst the previous generation was 78Nm.
Chery have been one of the strongest proponents of self developed engine technology and have been developing their own engines since they first set up Chery. Their first engine plant was taken from Ford Europe’s Dagenham plant in the UK, which made the Ford Escort engine. Chery dismantled and reassembled this plant in Wuhu China and put the 1.6 petrol engine into production for the Seat Toledo model they produced under the Fulwin name. Chery later set up its own engine division, ATECO, which went on to supply Fiat and several other manufacturers with engines.

“Engine”, not “engien”.
Thanks – Fixed! Mid morning typo!
Chery’s decision is puzzling since 800 cc displacement was from an old Korean kei-car tax-code law and it’s not on any of Chinese auto regulation. Is Chery not capable of increasing the displacement to 1000 cc or higher by itself?
Current Matiz’s displacement is 1000 cc under the revised kei-car tax code law, and previous-gen Euro market Matiz also had a 1000 cc engine, so this engine could be stroked to 1000 cc, and there is no reason to stay with 800 cc.
Chery has 800cc, 1.0L and 1.1L.
Its all about giving consumers choice.
Chery also makes a great range of engines for Quad Bikes and offroad buggies, their smallest engine 500cc:
