Honda Crosstour to launch in fourth quarter

The Honda Crosstour was unveiled to the Chinese public in April this year at the Beijing Auto Show, where it seemed to attract a small niche crowd of car fans.

The Crosstour will be built by the Guangzhou-Honda JV, and Guangzhou Honda CEO Mr. Yu Jun is eager to see the Crosstour launched in China and further Guangzhou Honda’s plans for the Chinese market, Guangzhou Honda is one of the few car makers in China to reach their middle of year sales goals, whilst their end of year sales goal is still set at 380,600 vehicles.

Last week the Ministry of Industry and Communications awarded Guangzhou-Honda the right to produce the Crosstour in China. An initial run of 2000 vehicles is set to commence soon which will then be sent out to dealers for assesment and receiving deposits, the Crosstour will officially launch in October this year.

Am I getting old, or are there other people out there who agree with me that this thing is just BUTT UGLY. Same with the BMW X6 (and a few others with this same style) – and I’ll tell WHY I think they’re ugly. It’s as though these things have a “image crisis” and are trying to be more than one thing at the same time – but they don’t really know WHAT they want to be. SUV? Jellybean car? Crossover? Now……I’m sure that the Crosstour is built with the usual impeccable Honda quality, and I’m sure it has many great features to offer the driver and passengers………but unfortunately it suffers from multiple personality disorder when it comes to it’s looks. To be honest, I’m REALLY surprised – this is the FIRST Honda/Acura I’ve felt this way about when it comes to looks. I’ve been a Honda (Civic) and Acura (Integra) owner, and I’ve pretty much loved everything they’ve ever made (yes, I even like the Ridgeline and the Element). I hope this (the Crosstour) is just an exception to the rule, and not a precedent for future.

In the US market, as in the Chinese market, the traditional wagon is not a popular body style. The Crosstour is Honda’s attempt to fill the wagon role in their model range. Toyota’s Venza, which IS a wagon, sells only 4,000 units a month in the US. Honda dose not break down Accord sales by body style, so we don’t know how many Crosstours they sell per month. However, I believe it’s sales are similar to the Venza. I think that these hatchback utilities will remain just a niche in the market. They’re different, but not as practical for families as minivans, MPVs, CUV, or SUVs so I doubt that they ever become big sellers.
