Jiangnan Auto back from the dead with old Suzuki Alto – to be sold at 18,000rmb

The Suzuki Alto has been sold in China under many different names and brands and not in an entirely legal fashion either. Jiangnan Auto was bought out by Zotye, a then aspiring SUV company that recently branched out into other models, they plan to resell the Jiangnan Alto for a mere 18,000rmb which is a significant cut under the current range of super mini cars such as the BYD F0 and QQ3 both of which cost around 28,000rmb to 35,000rmb for base models.

The 18,000rmb Alto is certainly basic, but at that price it is sure to gain consumers especially first time buyers that want a simple car to get about the village in.

It’s old, not all that good looking, and it will undoubtedly come with the 0.8l engine for that price……..and you know what? I’d probably choose this OVER a QQ3!! :) Why? Simple – MORE ROOM. I’ve been in the QQ3, and I’ve also been in the old Alto – the old Alto just doesn’t feel as cramped, and the 0.8l engine is surprisingly strong even with it’s tiny size. One more thing – the A/C with the Alto is a strong little beast, better than the QQ3 – very important for hot summer days in southern China!! :D

I like it. If all you are looking for is a cheap small car, then that might be the best choice.

Seems like Jiangnan has been selling this 25 year old Suzuki model forever. It’s interesting to note that the old price was well over 30,000 RMB and the car, along with other models of less than 1.0 liter, was banned from travel on Chang’an Blvd in Beijing, for eight years ending in 2006.
Porsche got away with turning out the same model for years so why not Chang’an.

I love old little underdog-cars. What they do always looks special, just because you wouldn’t expect they can do it.
