Chevoo

Chery are keen to show their green credentials are greener than any other auto maker, and they are planing to launch a new brand that will show case their new energy cars.

The new brand follows on from Chery’s mad cap scheme to launch different brands for different segment, the Riich brand became Chery’s luxury line up, whilst Reely will house the MPV and SUV line, Karry became the workhorse brand and sells cheap, economical vans and trucks for rural buyers, and the latest brand, Chevoo, will house Chery’s new energy range. The brand has not officially launched yet, but details including the logo have already leaked to the internet and have thus found their way to CCT. An official announcement from Chery is due soon.

The Chevoo name will be known as 骐诺 (Qi Nuo) in Chinese.

    Tomson, I have a Cadbury Flake here with your name on it but I think the Koreans already claimed it for their innovative EV tech. ;-)

    @korean guy –

    Hmmm…….Rezzo, Nubira, Evanda, Kalos – all Daewoo names. Musso, Kryon, Korando – all Ssangyong names. How about the Hyundai Scoupe, or Verna, or Mobis? Sorry dude, South Korea is quite capable of creating dumb names too.

    And while we’re talking innovation………let’s congratulate Hyundai for debuting South Korea’s FIRST electric car (better late than never, I suppose)……and the name? The BlueOn – I think it’s safe to say ANOTHER DUMB NAME. Am I Korea bashing? No, not at all – I’m just getting tired of certain people here that keep trying to tell us that South Korea’s s**t doesn’t stink. Corporate stupidity exists EVERYWHERE in the world – INCLUDING South Korea.

    The Chevoo name will run into all sorts of problem when exported. Too close to names used by Chevrolet, like Chevette. Distributors and dealers in many markets will avoid carrying the brand for the likely delays caused by legal claims.

    @Hugo90

    Chevrolet is a pretty minor brand name outside the USA. Although GM was successful in buying car brands they didn’t push their main brands too much except in major (English speaking) markets and even then it has not been so great. The Chevette was a Vauxhall in many overseas markets. It’s easy to embarrass traditional “Chevy” fans by showing pics of a matiz/spark thinking Chevy’s are all about V8′s

    Trying to push Chevoo is asking for trouble though and you are very right that they will have troubles exporting the brand.

    CCT. Is there any chance this was leaked to gauge public reaction????

    Don’t give Chinese companies naming hints, they might actually use it.

    Yes you are not bashing!
    And I am not bashing when I say CHEVOO is another FAILed attempt.

    “Don’t give Chinese companies naming hints, they might actually use it.”

    If I did that that I would call it thing’s like Excel (when it doesn’t) and Genesis (new beginnings of fuel efficient V8s that can’t do burnouts) fuel efficient V8′s with no motorsport pedigree.

    Actually, because weird names are everywhere, it’s a common thing/not that big of a deal. A Dodge Viper with another name is still a Dodge Viper, as long as the product is good, people will (likely) buy it. 懂?

    OK, I can’t resist – some new suggestions for names………

    The “pinnacle of synthesis” – the Pinis.
    “Stupendous and intrepid” – the Stupid.

    For those companies with big cars, how about this for an advertisement – “To promote grandeur and luxury, we proudly present……the Long Dong – the BIGGEST car in it’s class!”

    And finally, an advertisement for minivans……”We have the van that can handle the daily grind in China – the Vanghina”. :D

    ***Latest news from Chinese internet***

    This Chevoo brand & logo was a proposal from a consultant firm for Chery’s new energy project. The whole plan was cancelled in 2009 when Chery introduced the revised 4 brands strategy. Chevoo was leaked out accidentally by the project people and Chery’s official PR has confirmed the cancellation.

    Sorry to all China-bashing fans, no more fun now !!!

    “Sorry to all China-bashing fans, no more fun now !!!”

    No worries. There are more “Chingrish” names where it came from.

  14. avatar joninchina says:

    Actually, this is great news – it tells me that Chery also looked at this name (and logo) and decided “uh…………..NO”. The idea of creating a separate brand and logo for their new energy vehicles is fine……..and I’m sure they will come up with a much better name. One question does remain though – exactly WHAT new energy cars do they have at this time? The A5 hybrid? Anything else? There’s been talk for years about a A1 hybrid, but where is it? I suppose before they create this new brand, they need something important – some CARS.

  15. avatar hk says:

    Jon, there are couples of new energy vehicles available.

    1.A5 hybrids. They just save fuel by stalling in traffic, pretty low tech.
    2.QQ3 EV. There are two versions. One with lead acid battery for low speed & short range. One with lithium-ion battery for high speed & long range.
    3.M1 EV. They are lithium-ion battery powered.
    4.G5 EV. This is a Quantum JV project with Better Place + A123 where the battery is replaced in seconds in service station, pretty high tech.

    With the dropping of Chevoo brand, Chery will just attach a special label at the back for identification.
