Qi Chen – Dongfeng and Nissan’s new brand

Qi Chen

Dongfeng and Nissan successfully launched their new brand, called Qi Chen or Venucia in English, yesterday. The new brand comes after 7 years of operations together and was launched on the same day that Dongfeng-Nissan built their two millionth car together.

As the competition within the Chinese market grows, as do the players. Originally there was two kinds of automotive operation within China, there was the joint ventures (JV) and the self developed players such as Chery and Geely, but due to the furthering ties of joint venture partners that have seen the likes of GM and SAIC and also Chang’an and Ford explore overseas opportunities together.

The launch of Qi Chen is aimed at third and fourth tier cities in China and will be making full use of Nissan’s older platform and engines, the first car is expected to launch in early 2012 and will be based on the Nissan Tiida platform, prices are expected to be in the 50,000rmb range.

One point that sticks out is the addition of the English name for the brand, if the brand is set to be a China only brand why does it carry an English name, or are Dongfeng and Nisan planning to attack other markets as well?

“if the brand is set to be a China only brand why does it carry an English name, or are Dongfeng and Nisan planning to attack other markets as well?”

Probably for the same reason that most Chinese manufacturers have English names as well!

Yes, it is all politics. This frenzy of so-called domestic brands are acts by the Big Four (FAW,SAIC,BAIC,DFM) to suppress the REAL domestic brands (Geely,Chery,BYD…). Those CEO in Big Four have been selling China’s auto market to foreigners for more than 30 years. What a shame they keep on doing this, any nationalistic Chinese should boycott their new brands. This is the biggest conspiracy in China’s auto history, Chinese Chinese… please wakeup !!!

    Qi Chen = kitchen? :-D
    But the logo is nice

Guys, now is the turn for Japan-bashing. This Venucia logo resembles to Subaru’s. I wonder why Nissan would allow Dongfeng to do such thing to damage fellow peer?

Edmunds reported that the 5 star logo is meant to represent the 5 stars on the PRC national flag. They also said that the Venucia (ven-ou-sha) brand will eventually be sold outside China. This is all being done with the full support of Nissan, which is an unusual step for a JV partner to help promote the export of a Chinese brand. This could be the start of greater future cooperation between Dongfeng and Nissan in various world markets.

    @Volv’an
Yes, the five stars on the Chinese national flag is a copy of Subaru’s logo… :)

  7. avatar hk says:

Ed, this is a Japanese conspiracy. Nissan borrows the Chinese flag design features in this Venucia logo to degrade the national flag. My last post was wrong in direction, there is nothing related to Subaru. (Subaru with 6 stars)

For the international market, these pseudo-Chinese brands will only take away the market share of Chery, Geely… What an evil move those foreigners and traiters have planned.

We should boycott these new brands !!!

@hk: Those big four you mention, they are government-controlled, right? You would expect that the Chinese government would try to protect the Chinese auto-market, instead of suppressing domestic brands…

I think, this is just me here, the Chinese government is conspiring, but not with Nissan, but against it. Nissan will mate Qi Chen big, and then it will take over Nissan. Same thing with the new Guangzhou-Honda brand, and all the others soon to come.

And once they control our cars, they control the world!

Chinese World Domination is Inevitable!!! Mouhahahaha*!!!!

    (*)Evil laughter.

Guys, lets learn the real story behind.

1 German – VW was first to enter China and enjoy the biggest reward. Jetta & Santana roamed China for more than 30 years especially in fleet market. A6L is a standard issue to all government officials. Even the Shanghai designed Lavida has to be under VW brand. There are no domestic brands from FAW/SAIC JV, “technology transfer for market” is just a lie. BMW & Mercedes Benz are here for the riches, no way China’s auto industry can benefit from their existence.

2 Japan – Their auto makers were pretty cautious to enter China when Deng Xiaoping first opened up the market. They feared their technology will be stolen and in the mean time they were busy in attacking the US market. When they saw the success of VW, they came back to occupy the southern China where VW had overlooked. Toyota, Honda & Nissan are doing extremely well nowadays and have the same market share as the Germans. Now with the introduction of so-called domestic brands, they are just transferring past generation technology to the JVs and use them to crush real domestic brands. Local auto makers will not have the resources to fight this battle.

3 Korea – They followed the Japanese and occupied the capital city. Any Chinese will feel bad in Beijing to see Hyundai all around, this is a disgrace to any country with auto manufacturing. Though not a single pseudo-domestic brand is created from their JVs, the Koreans have been selling their outdated technology to small independent auto makers like Hawtai to pull the legs of domestic brands from behind.

4 America – GM is saved by the China market. The acquisition of Daewoo was a smart move to attack China’s market. By disguise a Korean car into American car, GM has convinced their Chinese customers to buy these pseudo-American brands. GM’s biggest move was to partner with SAIC/Wuling to conquer the “bread van” market, then move up to sedans & SUVs. The ambitious plan to use this JV to explore Indian market is a real threat to Mahidra-Suzuki. Ford & Chrylser are no match to GM in China, GM’s success will only block the ways for local brands to move upmarket.

To sum up, they are here for market growth, business expansion and making money. In no way they will transfer the core technology to help China’s auto industry. I can single out a crucial auto part as an example – automatic gearbox. No Chinese auto maker can produce a mature one and they lose a hell big chunk of the market. Now it is up to ordinary Chinese people to boycott these pseudo-domestic brands for the sake of the REAL future of China’s auto industry.
