Dongfeng-Honda to launch own brand in 2011
Whilst Dongfeng-Nissan are growing their own brand, it appears that Dongfeng-Honda are getting ahead in the technology department but are lacking in the branding department. Dongfeng and Nissan announced their own plans for their new brand entitled ‘Qi Chen’ several weeks ago, their first car is expected to launch in early 2012 and be based on the current Nissan Tiida platform. Dongfeng-Honda’s first self developed brand is expected to launch in the second half of 2011 and will thus have a few months head start in the marketing game than Nissan’s own brand and will be based on the current Honda Civic platform.
Honda is expected to ramp up its China market offerings considerably in the coming months as it feels ever growing pressure from Toyota, Nissan, and also Hyundai and Kia in the sedan, compact sedan, SUV and MPV markets where it has so far gained a strong market segment. Honda are expected to launch the Honda Crosstour crossover SUV in October this year with a 3.5L engine, but will follow with small displacements later on.

Dongfeng-Honda, Dongfeng Nissan or simply Dongfeng? What a chaos. If Dongfeng is going to launch a model (in a new brand-name) based on Nissan Tiida – how come it is then the Dongfeng-Honda that does it??? Sorry – it shows how little I know (or understand) with regard to Chinese industry.
China’s auto policy is very complicated.
1) Any foreign automaker can have 2 JVs ONLY.
2) Any local automaker can have no limit # JVs.
3) Foreign partner can have no more than 50% of the JV.
So you have Dongfeng-Nissan, Dongfeng-Honda & Dongfeng-PSA.
The new brand ‘Qi Chen’ is under Dongfeng-Nissan so its car is based on Tiida. While Dongfeng-Honda’s Civic-based new car does not yet have a brand name.
To make it more complicated, Dongfeng itself has its own brand.
