India’s Reva electric car company planning to enter China
The Indian company, Mahindra Reva, are planning to launch their two seater electric car range into the Chinese market to take advantage of the current fanfare around electric cars. Reva’s CEO, Mr. Pawan Goenka, believes that as China is the world’s largest car market then it will be a great market in the future for new energy vehicles.
By 2020 China is aiming to have sales of 5 million new energy vehicles per year according to news reports from last week, but are Chinese consumers ready for Indian cars? Iranian cars were expected to enter China in 2008, but plans for this seem to have died, Proton were set to enter China but have done so via their Chinese partner in Youngman. It seems that China has enough of its own developing car brands, and doesn’t appear to be overly interested in taking on other countries developing brands at this stage.
Will Reva make it in China? They seem to have been reasonably popular in London as the G-Wizz brand of cars, but will we see them running on the crowded streets of Beijing or Shanghai anytime soon?

Will Reva make it in China?
Definitely NO NO NO !!!
If you are talking about cheap small electric cars, there are a lot Chinese mades. If something like those running in London, the Beijing or Shanghai citizens are not willing to pay that price. For that amount they prefer to a bigger QQ or F0. BTW there is a similar EV from Hong Kong called Mycar. The design is by a local company and produced in Dongguan right next to HK. Mycar is selling in the EU and recently an American investor has bought out the company. I see Mycar is in a better position than Reva in the China market.
You mean all those copycat QQ or F0?! yes , you are absolutely right! Chinese inferiority complex prefer only prefer “White brands” or those copycat Chinese brands!
@Sha,
I think HK is talking more about small foreign Ev’s will be no match for locally produced vehicles unless the price is on par with such manufacturers. The only way for this to happen is if Mahindra Reva produce them locally which is not likely (hk will correct me if I’m wrong”
@hk
Never knew about the mycar. Just looked and it looks to me like a Honda S2000 r@&#d a golf cart….. saying that though golf carts and forklifts are the true modern EV’s and have been in use for years.
My dear friend Sha, I don’t really quite understand the purpose of your comment. Your China bashing comment is pointless, any relation to small EVs we are talking about? Did I irk you just saying this Indian Reva will have no market in China? If you are from India, I can understand your hard feelng. But if you are from the same place as IHC/kg, well… you got a chip on your shoulder?
@ pijiu
Yes, this MyCar is quite close to a golf cart except with a roof and windows to keep you dry and warm. A new version with 4dr for 4 people powered by lithium-ion battery is under preparation. This time A/C is available, a must in southern China.
The American company is GreenTech Automotive, from their homepage it seems they have a big plan for a full lineup of EVs. It looks like they are sourcing the body shells from other Chinese peers and install the EV hardwares. It sounds like a copy of Coda cars’ practice.
Chery has QQEv & M1/M2Ev and Geely has PandaEv, they are all ready for mass production. How can this Indian Reva make it to China?
