The devil is in the detail: Hawtai’s B35 SUV

Hawtai’s B35 SUV concept sent a tidal wave through this years Beijing Auto Show, but to be honest it was the best looking car at the show and showed that Chinese automotive companies still had the power to surprise just when you think they are starting to tow the line and produce bland looking cars like their Japanese neighbours.

Spy pics of the pre-production B35 have been leaked to the internet and it looks like it is going to be fairly similar to the concept car from April this year. The interior looks rather cheap due to the sharp camera flash, but in person they are much more toned down and earthly – just like the Porsche Cayenne. The Chinese automotive media are not shy about calling the B35 a fake Cayenne. Power for the B35 will be derived from SAIC’s 1.8T kavachi engine that is also used in the Roewe 550 and MG6, a diesel automatic version is likely to launch soon after as Hawtai are eager to become one of the leading diesel car manufacturers in China.

We can’t wait to see this model at the Guangzhou Auto Show this year.

    Looks good but why cant we have a decent engine in there 1.8ltr seems small for a car this size should be 2.5 ltr or even 3 ltr but possible will buy one when it comes out as I am in the market for this type of car

    Is this a nice looking car? It’s a typical boring SUV – I don’t get it. Why do Chinese people (and many others) see this kind of car as some kind of status symbol?

    @Peter
    Maybe you should’ve seen the car in person before making such kind of judgments and speaking these words.
