Chery’s Six Speed CVT to launch next year
Chery have been working very hard on developing their own engine and gearbox line over the past 5 years, their ATECO engine range is starting to bare fruit after several years of hard toiling in the form of 2.0T engines that are used in the current G5 and G6 sedans and will soon be found in the Z6 roadster. Chery’s first six speed gearbox is hastening its pace and is looking for a year end production run.
Chery’s six speed gearbox is an important step forward for the Chines auto industry, and media outlets are already reporting how Chery has managed to break the back of a foreign held monopoly on the automatic gearbox industry here in China. Virtually all automatic gearbox companies in China are foreign owned, i.e. Asin, JATCO, ZF etc.

You can’t have a CVT and a Six-speed in the same transmission.
2o6, do you mean that a continuosly variable transmission must be just that, continuously variable in its reduction, or multiplication, without any defined, or perceptible, gear ratio changes? Good to know……
A CVT doesn’t have a fixed set of gear ratios, instead it changes continuously (hence the name) among an infinite set of ratios.
However, some CVTs have a manual mode in which only a certain number of ratios are used (6 or 7) to give the driver the impression of a “real” gear change.
But this is only a software strategy, the gearbox itself doesn’t have six (or seven) speeds, so speaking of a six-speed CVT is incorrect – it’s either a CVT or a six-speed automatic.
