20,000 Chinese built Chevrolet Sails heading for foreign markets in 2011
The Honda Fit (Jazz) was one of the first Chinese built vehicles to hit the market in Europe and now GM are planning to follow in Honda’s foot steps and launch its Shanghai-GM built vehicles in overseas markets. GM launched the new Sail in January 2010 and became the first foreign branded car to retail in China for less than 60,000rmb ($9,100USD) and sold 125,625 vehicles in its first year and accounted for 12% of GM vehicle sales in the Chinese market. GM later exported 5000 Sails to Chilie, in 2011 upto 20,000 Sails are expected to be sold out of China to other developing lands.
GM are seeing strong growth in other developing markets, particularly in South American countries. Local production of the Sail is expected to begin in Chilie in the near future.

Yes, GM is following in Honda’s footsteps in a manner of speaking, but GM has decided it doesn’t need a wholly owned enterprise to get the job done. Apparently the joint venture will serve even the export goals just fine.
