BAW’s B61 SUV spotted out, showing some Jeep vibes
Beijing Auto Works was a major Jeep producer, and to be fair it still is, the first foreign automobile produced in China was the Jeep Cherokee that was made in partnership between AMC and Beijing Auto Works prior to the Chrysler takeover.
The forthcoming B61 has already been seen at last years Beijing Auto Show where it was firmly at the concept stage, the B61 measures in at 2650mm 4615 x 1860 x 1832mm and will be powered by a 2.4L engine.
When talking with an unnamed former BAW engineer last year, he bitterly complained that BAW’s engineers and designers had been reduced to translators during the Chrysler joint venture years and had not been able to design anything new or interesting during their tenure, it seems that BAW are now feeling that pain as their new SUV range is looking rather awkward. BAW are also contracting a lot of work out to Beijing design studio, CH-Auto, especially the design of the Chrysler based cars such as a rehashed Sebring and 300C under the BAIC brand.
