The Friday Question: What car would you import to China if you could?

Lets say you’re one of the few remaining Foreign Experts in China (seriously, they used to give those cards to anyone, not so anymore!) and you want to assert your government given right to import your own personal car into China from where ever you came from. What do you bring, and why?

Let us know via the comment box.

Ash

Ash came to China at 18 on a whim and never left. Some 10 years later he collected a degree and a family along the way and now focuses his time on watching the Chinese car industry develop. He has witnessed the market change from being minor backyard market in to the world's biggest and most important market for all car manufacturers. Hennessey Challenger SRT600 in black. Would make the local Shanghai guys look even more like wimps with their grocery getter Panameras and their man bags.

    Gas prices be damned.

Ooh, you made this into a separate topic!

I’ll revise my answer from the other thread…

For me, it would probably be the Infiniti G35/G37 sedan or coupe. Or maybe a Porsche 911 or Cayman S. 3-4 years old second-hand cars are dirt cheap in the US, and still quite reliable (well, at least the Infiniti is – not sure about Porsche lately).

Why? For one, these are cars that you don’t see everyday here, and secondly, I could actually afford to buy them overseas (second-hand).

Or if I’m feeling a bit crazy, I would bring over an Audi R8 (assuming that I could sell it here after a year or two without taking a loss).

i believe the infinitis are available in china, i most certainly saw one, though rare.

for me, it would be a holden hsv w427

This reminds me, just a few days ago I saw an old green roadster rip down JianWai Avenue, it was driven by a laowai. I don’t know much about cars of that era, but it looked and sounded gorgeous. I haven’t been that excited since the time I was blitzed by a 911 turbo back home going at way above the speed limit.

I tried to catch up to him in my Fiesta to get a better look, actually he wasn’t speeding that much, but the traffic was too thick. By the time I got close he was just exiting.

I wonder how he was able to get that car into China!

It’s great to see China Car Times revisiting this topic, can you stress the 1 year rule when you bring out the finished article please?

It’s something our clients never seem to be able to accept.

I’d bring in something really cool if I could like a Zonda.

    • avatar Damian Holmes says:

I’ve seen a couple of Zondas in dealerships in Beijing

      • avatar CCT says:

There is a dealer across from the Aston Martin dealership in Beijing, they have quite a few rare imports of unusual American and European cars. They have a Dodge Ram SRT in the window and also a Plymouth Prowler, I actually forget what road it is…

  10. avatar Deno says:

OK, I’ll play, but since you are asking I’d go with a motorcycle rather than a cage, given that one can buy almost all brands and many models in China.
    I’d luv a…
    Yamaha XT1200Z “super ten”

For those that wish for a Infiniti, Porsche et al, most of their respective models are available here. With regard to the comment about the 1 year rule… what is that? From what I understand, the one year rule has changed, and in actuality no longer applies, i.e. The foreigner must have had ownership of said vehicle they wish to import for at least 1 year, or that they have been resident inside PR China for 1 year. From what I understand importing second hand/used vehicles is no longer a viable option.

“…most of their respective models are available here.”
i thought this question applied to new cars as well as second hand ones. sure you can get second hand cars here. if spending 30k rmb on a santana which is kept together by tape and mud is your kinda thing…
but – this being china, it’s true that importing a (relatively) new car will probably safe you quite a bit of time and hassle with customs and ccc, IF you are even granted to import 2nd hand car.
