MG5 production version spotted out testing
Late last week we got our first look at the production ready MG5 thanks to our friends at Sohu, but we had to wait until this morning before we could share them with the rest of the world, it made for an antagonizing weekend to say the least. The MG5 concept was first shown at the Shanghai Auto Show and was clearly the star of the show possibly due to its prominent placing in one of the first halls you entered.
The MG5 sits on a shared platform with the Roewe 350 but will not share the conservative styling with the 350, instead the MG5 will be a small Opel Astra sized hot hatch. The final production model shown here out testing seems to have kept its styling very close to the concept version, the side profile looks to be spot on with the concept and even the alloy wheels seem to have some similarities.
On the power front the MG5 is expected to carry the same 1.5L and 1.8L engines as its Roewe 350 brother, but an extra 1.5T unit is going to be made available for the MG5. A mixture of 6 speed auto and 6 speed manuals are going to be on hand for gear shifting responsibilities.

Who designed that hideous interior??? And there is absolutely no family consistency at all with all these new MGs. Apart from the badge you wouldn’t know this was the same marque as the MG6 or the MG3. SAIC needs to have a good hard look at BMW and Mercedes and other marques who can make all their product look like they come from the same manufacturer.
well there is family resemblance then there is look-alikes. i think the new MG’s feature design cues that show they are from the same manufacturer but they don’t go as far as BMW and Audi and produce products that look like they have been pumped up a few times to give different sizes for the different car classes. i say keep up the great work SAIC!
For once, I agree with something nice that was said about a chinese automaker.
I love SAIC, if it weren’t for them, MG would be following Rover, Trimuph, Austin, and Austin-Healey into the sunset.
One note SAIC, build better and more fuel-efficient engines, and quickly too, because that is one of two major shortcomings for the new MG’s, the other being the interior.
We are an MG Dealer on Aruba. I can assure you , the MG’s are far nicer and better than any pictures you have seen. I can agree lightly that the interiors do not follow the same design through the models as BMW or other makes , but I’m sure that will come with time. I can tell you , that these cars are well made and for the money ,at least here on Aruba , none of the other manufacturers can compete dollar wise.
