roeweW5 SUV Finalc 300x245 Roewe W5 SUV to launch soon, prices to be from 170,000rmbThe advertising campaign for the Roewe W5 started as soon as the car was officially aired at the Shanghai Auto Show, the advert shows the story of how a young man researching the history of (presumably) his Grandpa who appears to have flown British made Spitfires during the Second World War around the Yunnan-Burma border, our hero drives his W5 SUV across China’s rugged Western scenery, showing his own rugged looks along the way.

The Roewe W5 is expected to launch in the second half of 2011 with pricing from as low as 170,000rmb according to Chinese media reports. The W5 should give other SUV’s in the compact SUV segment a run for their money, as the Roewe W5 is considerably bigger and will be offering more power than anything from Toyota, Nissan or Honda.

Although SAIC are still playing the British connection for their Roewe brand the W5 is actually based on the Ssangyong Kyron, the only British connection is the 1.8T engine which was developed by MG-Rover prior to the SAIC takeover, the larger 3.2L V6 engine on offer was bought from Ssangyong which in turn bought it from Mercedes-Benz.

Quite a good advert but is it me or does the foreign character look as if he’s played by a different actor in every shot?

I thought it was on sale already. I’ve seen two of them in my neighbourhood here in Shanghai.
