GM wins in China again on the back of its vans

GM’s July 1.8% sales decline was reversed in August on the back of mini van sales, sales in August increased by 13% over the same period in 2010 where the company sold 181,625 vehicles.

Deliveries of light commercial vehicles at GM rebounded after the auto-maker introduced discounts to offset slowing sales earlier this year. The carmaker also rolled out a new sedan, the Baojun 630, to cater to entry-level buyers in the world’s largest auto market last month.

GM offered steep discounts on its Wuling vans during August to boost sales, a tactic that got it into trouble in the US market during the last decade. Sales at the Wuling three way joint venture between SAIC, GM and Wuling reached 102,959 vehicles during the month August. Sales of passenger cars by Shanghai GM under the Chevrolet and Buick brand were especially strong in August with sales increasing 21.7% to 98,674 units.
