Next generation Roewe 750 inside and out
The current Roewe 750 is a little long in the tooth, as it is based on the Rover 75 which itself debuted in 1998 but saw production in China under the Roewe brand in 2006 – 14 years on the market is a long time for a car even in China. The next generation of 750 is under development and is likely to be shown at the Guangzhou Auto Show next month in concept form before being released at the Beijing Auto Show in 2012, basically anything SAIC can do to upset its competitors at Guangzhou Auto and Beijing Auto and steal some limelight at the same time.
Roewe will be using the Epsilon II platform from GM for the new 750, this platform is already used in the Buick Regal and also the Buick Lacrosse which makes us wonder why SAIC went through the trouble of buying Rover’s left over bits if it is going to use GM platforms rather than developing its own, or perhaps GM offered the platforms as a sweetner to get its 1% share back. Engine power is reportedly a 2.0T and a 2.4L which is the same as what is used in the Buick Lacrosse in China, so are SAIC planning to use GM engines as well? SAIC have already worked hard on developing their own range of engines, so it seems strange that they would use GM power plants in their new 750. The interior design of the 750 is also roughly on par with the Buick Regal, the inset GPS/DVD screen and steering wheel both look to be stock GM designs, although the electronic parking brake is something that has only appeared on the new Regal GS so far.
We currently have more rumor and speculation rather than actual fact on the new 750, but as with all rumors there is no smoke without fire – we will keep you updated.
