Nissan officially opens design studio in Beijing
With top class design based universities such as Tsinghua University and the Central Academy of Fine Arts being local neighbors, it’s easy to understand why Nissan chose to put its third design center in Beijing, whilst other manufacturers maybe flocking to put their design studios China’s financial center in Shanghai, Beijing is still ultimately the cultural center of China and with two high level universities close-by Nissan will without doubt get the pick of the crop when it comes to new talent.
The new design center was opened last week by Nissan’s Global Design Chief Mr. Shiro Nakamura, the new design center is close by to Beijing’s 798 Art District and was originally set to open in March 2011 but owing to multiple disasters in Japan the launch was pushed back, at the Shanghai Auto Show Nissan did show one of their first products of the design center: a Nissan March/Micra based powerhouse that could potentially be sold in the next few months. According to an interview with the Wall Street Journal Mr. Nakamura is hoping that the new Beijing studio could compete with the Japanese design center and also with other Nissan design centers in London and San Diego.
The Beijing studio is now capable of working on one car project at a time and is currently putting its full efforts in to assisting with the development of a new cars interior and exterior, which should be on the market in the next two years.
