Confirmed: New Roewe 550 will have dual clutch gearbox

The next Roewe 550 is nearly here judging by the below spy shot, furthermore the Chinese media are confirming that the 550 will be carrying 1.8L and 1.8T engines combined with a dual clutch gearbox.

So who supplied the new gearbox? Is it from SAIC’s partner at VW via Borgwarner? Is it self developed? Sort of. The gearbox has been self developed by SAIC and GM as a low cost unit. Furthermore the 550 will come with stop/start technology as standard on mid to high range models as a means to save on juice and get some hybrid vehicles into the market. Interestingly a 1.5VCT model will be introduced as well which has electric motors attached to it to drive the wheels (we think) but we will update you on this interesting car at a later date.

Let’s hope it doesn’t take SAIC 2 years to incorporate this technology into the MG 6s being sold in the UK. Stop/start and DSG will go some way to curb criticism of the car.
