BYD working on 1.2 and 2.0 TID engines

BYD has received a lot of press attention this year and last, largely due to their rapid fall in sales which practically mirrored their massive increase in sales in 2009, but this has not put BYD off the car making game. BYD entered the car business in a similar way to Hyundai in the late 60′s, they had the car making passion but they did not have the technological independence until later on. BYD developed its first 2.0L engine several years ago but largely relied on off the shelf Mitsubishi engines in the same way that Hyundai had to. Now BYD have sucesfully developed their own 1.5T and will be expanding their turbo line up to include a miniature 1.2T and also a larger 2.0T.

BYD’s turbo series are Turbo Injection whilst the D stands for Dual Clutch – another piece of technology that BYD have been slavishly working on for the past year, a concept of the gearbox was unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show earlier this year and should see production in early 2013.

On paper, BYD’s own 1.5T engine has more power than VW’s 1.4TSI (113kw@5200rpm – 240Nm/1750-3500rpm V’s Volkswagen’s 96kw@5000rpm – 200Nm/1750-3500rpm), but fuel consumption is likely to be in VW’s favor. The 1.5T is currently installed in the BYD G6, although it has the potential to move elsewhere in the BYD stable. BYD has realized that its short term success relies mostly on its ability to innovate rather than clone and also bring more economical engines to the market will win it more market share and greater sales, the long term bet is of course its electric car range.
