First look at the Seventh Generation Golf Preparing for Production in China

The sixth generation Golf has been a hit for VW in China, the compact hatch is produced via the FAW-VW joint venture in Changchun although for the next generation that factory location is expected to become Foshan in Southern China where a new factory is being built to satisfy the local market in Guangdong.

The 7th Generation Golf will come in three flavors when it rolls off the production lines in 2013, 1.4TSI, 1.6L and of course GTI flavor. The 1.6L is likely to be the big model with VW putting aside 62% of production capacity to focus on this model and 38% for the TSI model according to leaked internal documents from VW. The deletion of two doors from the Golf will likely be welcomed by petrol heads in China, so far VW has only offered the Golf in five door form be it a GTI or a regular Golf, although VW will likely continue with the 5 door option for the Chinese market.

On the inside of the 7th Gen Golf, it looks like business as usual in terms of interior decor, not much has changed from the sixth gen, although the model shown here does look to be a basic model. The exterior has had some modest changes to the overall style but follows the current VW corporate beak.

The MQB platform will be used for the new Golf which will also be shared by the Audi A3 in the same factory according to our inside sources, the A3 will be produced in China from 2013 onwards.

It appears that the car in the pictures is a mule. The underpinnings may be the MQB platform of the Mk7 Golf (which would explain the slightly flared front arches and plastic spats on the rear wheel arches to accommodate the different track and wheelbase) but the body and interior are pure Mk6 Golf.
