MG6 Turbo Diesel Spotted in China, sporting six speed gearbox
If you listen to European MG fans all they want is a diesel, and perhaps an automatic gearbox, the current MG6 made in MG UK from kits sent from China offers neither, and thus there hasn’t exactly been Apple-like queuing to buy the MG6. Europeans love their diesels, UK’ers love their diesels even more, so for MG to launch without one is a little unforgivable but these spy shots from Auto.163 apparently show a turbo diesel MG6 readying itself for a UK launch. Of course the diesel unit is being tested in China ahead of the engines being shipped to the UK, now where the engine is from is still a mystery, SAIC were romantically linked to a diesel engine manufacturer in China for a few months but apparently the deal was denied, so the mystery continues.
Rumor has it the engine is a 1.9L turbo diesel unit, but Chinese media haven’t yet received engine statistics but when they do, you can be that we will be the first to tell you.
We have learned that the above car is now running with a six speed gearbox rather than the rather decrepit 5 speed manual currently used and supplied by Aisin. The new six speed manual raises more questions than it answers, is this a stop gap measure before the release of the dual clutch tech automatics later in 2012?

Hmmm a diesel will help but the real problem is that the MG is an almost car. It’s almost good enough in almost every respect. Nothing makes this car aspirational and it can’t even claim to be sporty or cheap. Why buy this over a Ford?
We’ve seen the diesel in the UK – in the background of pictures of a Royal Visit to the factory, there was an MG6 with an unusual engine. The registration number, when checked, revealed that it was a diesel version.

I agree. It’s slightly cheaper than Ford and better equipped, but then so is a Skoda which is better built, more stylish and backed by VW…and also has a full range of modern Turbo petrol and Turbo diesel engines (vital for the UK and Europe).
About time!
This is worthy of a decent advertising & PR effort – time to get the wallet out MGUK!
