Suzuki Clinging to Life in China

Suzuki has become Japan’s Chrysler. Suzuki’s range of cars remain on the smaller side in terms of size. Aside from the company’s SUV and slow selling Kizashi sedan, Suzuki still remains tied to its small car range such as the Swift and the SX4.

The aforementioned cars are Suzuki’s big hitters for the Chinese market, although both models came out in 2003 and 2006 respectfully, neither has had any major updates since their launch in the market.

At the Beijing Auto Show Suzuki showed off its range extender Swift and also a new small car concept, neither models were gaining any spectacular foot traffic to the stand.

The Swift Range Extender is a extended range electric vehicle like the Chevy Volt. Its pure electric range is about 30km on a full battery. After the battery is depleted, an internal combustion engine will generate electricity to power the wheels.

The green one is called the G70 and it is the same concept Suzuki showed in Geneva. It’s a small and very light car weighing only 730kg. Thanks to its small size, 800cc engine, regenerative braking and engine start and stop the G70 is expected to be extremely fuel efficient.

If it wasn’t for Maruti in India and Japanese K-cars i have the feeling Suzuki would have long gone out of business.

Reason for lack of foot traffic – their model is wearing too much.
