China has the Prius, it also has the Lexus CT200H. Guess which one sells better despite being more expensive and imported into China? Style trumps green awareness every time in the PRC. On that note, its a little unusual to hear that the Honda Insight is coming to China, the imported Honda Civic Hybrid never really made too many sales, but it did gain traction once the price was dropped from 250,000RMB to a more palatable 150,000RMB, although we’re sure that Honda lost money on that one.
The Insight will come with a 1.3L engine mated to Honda’s IMA electric motor system, pricing is not going to be cheap thanks to a high Yen and Chinese import taxes. We can hope for somewhere in the 200,000RMB range but 250,000RMB is looking more likely. The Insight comes as Honda China are trying to flex their green muscles with the introduction of hybrid models such as the CRZ and also the Honda Fit Hybrid, the latter is expected to see local production in the near future.
