VW laid the groundwork for its dominance early, 1983, years before the other foreign joint ventures got off the ground. It never let human rights concerns, or popular uprisings, like Tiananmen, get in its way. Even for China’s older generation, dazhong Santana, has become a household brand name, ingrained in the culture.
