According to Chinese media reports both Foton and Great Wall Motors are planning to enter the Indian market in the near future. Foton has reportedly acquired a patch of land on which to develop a production facility for commercial vehicles due to the large demand for efficient CV’s in the Indian market.
Great Wall Motors are also reportedly planning to enter the Indian market with the Baoding based company actively looking for land in three states, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, according to Wall Street Journal reports. Great Wall is apparently planning to launch their products in India in early 2015. According to cardekho.com, both manufacturers have already paid a visit to the Society of Indian Auto Manufacturers to discuss possible market entry.
The Indian car market is a predominantly diesel focused market, which lines up well with Great Wall’s own product range of diesel SUV’s and pick up trucks, the company has also been developing smaller turbo diesel engines but also have a strong focus on small displacement gasoline engines. The Indian SUV market, like the Chinese SUV market, is one of the sole bright spots in the era of slow growth, the Indian SUV market grew by 16% in the in the first part of 2012 which represents a large potential market for Great Wall.
Other Chinese manufacturers have flirted with India before now, Chery’s own vehicles have spotted in India but the company has yet to make a formal announcement regarding market entry. Likewise, Indian cars have yet to enter the Chinese market.
