The Best Selling Auto Brands in China in 2012

Some car companies are clearly doing better than others, but other car companies might surprise you with their ranking on this list. The VAG group of brands continue to dominate the Chinese market, and clearly if it wasn’t for the powerhouse that is WuLing then GM would have been in the second or third spot a long time ago. Please note that these figures include Made in China vehicles only, imported vehicles are not tallied here as of yet, due to a difficulty in getting hold of the actual figures.Chrysler’s figures likely come from the Fujian Chrysler joint venture that seems to have been mothballed some time in 2012, hence the addition of the company’s products in this tally.

Factual year-end stats are hard to come by for today’s China market. The totals we’ve seen published lately for Chinese automakers, here and at other sources, are quite high, so we always wonder if the foreign jv sales totals, and their imports, have been included in the overall figure.
The above “own brands” list presents some confusion as well. We come away wondering if it is limited to sedans, or does it include SUV, or MPVs, and/or light trucks (pickups)?

Why are “BJ Auto” (BAW? perhaps) and “Beijing” (BAIC independent? perhaps) listed separtately?
Among the Geely models, where does the best selling CK enter into the numbers? How about Dongfeng’s number, does it include Liuzhou, and Xiaokang (Yu’an)? Does the Brilliance number consist of just Zhonghua sedans or Mianyang light trucks as well?
Changfeng has merged with GAC and yet the light truck maker Changfeng Yangzi continues to operate under the Changfeng name. So are the GAC numbers exclusive of both Changfengs?
Does JMC number include Landwind or is that included in the numbers of the Landwind parent Chang’an? Since Chang’an and subsidiaries Hafei-Chang’he are listed separately, can we assume that Zotye and subsidiary Jiangnan are too? Has ZX Auto, that is said to have produced some 50,000 units in 2011, really shrunken to 4,660 for 2012?

Do I expect CCT to have the answers to these questions? Not really. But someone would think that CAAM or CATARC would get their arms around this monster so folks could get a more accurate idea of what is going on.
Finally, words like “vehicles” doesn’t necessarily mean “cars”, and “cars” doesn’t necessarily mean “sedans”. In the Chinese press the use of these terms needs to be clarified (or at least qualified) if communication is to be successful.

I find it kind of hard to believe that Honda outsold Toyota, let alone Nissan. Could I be the only one?

    Why is Honda listed twice?

Well spotted – for some reason during the translation I got Hyundai and Honda mixed up.

Dragin, I totally agree with you. In Chinacartimes, we concern mainly cars (Sedans).
Wuling and Changan are just selling “Bread Vans”……..
