Getting into the government procurement list is the goal of many Chinese car markers, the list provides easy sales to government figures who shop primarily on size and also displacement and price to meet their buying targets, governments tend not to care about color, cost or interior, as long as the outside is big enough and there is enough room in the rear.
Dongfeng are planning to use the Citroen C5 platform which is also shared with the Peugeot 508 to create a vehicle targeted directly at government ministers who are now under strict supervision for cary buying. The Citroen C5 didn’t pick up the business orientated market as expected, but when under a Dongfeng brand we could potentially see improved sales.
Dongfeng’s own Shen Feng brand has peformed okay to date in second, third and fourth tier cities with products based on older PSA and Nissan platforms, but the introduction of a larger sedan may spur sales. Dongfeng sees its three sub brands as being similar to the GM range of vehicles, the Feng Shen is apparently aimed at Buick like affordable luxury, whilst the Feng Xing range is aimed at Chevrolet levels of being affordable and somewhat cool, and the Dongfeng owned Zhengzhou range of vehicles is thought to be a GMC equivalent.
