Earlier this week the Shenzhen based automaker BYD announced plans to open a new facility in the USA to build electric buses for the US market. BYD’s Vice President Stella Li announced plans at the company’s zero emissions US headquarters, and announced that the first ten buses will be heading to Long Beach and will be in service in early 2014.
BYD currently employs forty employees in its American HQ but this is expected to be expanded considerably as the facility in the Mojave desert comes online. The facility is a former RV factory that is being refurbished to meet BYD’s needs, and will produce around 1000 buses per year within the next decade according to Ms. Li’s own expectations.
The EV buses are capable of traveling 155 miles between each charge with a full load and air conditioning turned on, which should be enough for inner city travel
