Volkswagen’s rival to the Ford Ecosport and Buick’s Encore has arrived in the Chinese patent office indicating that a launch is not too far away. It hasn’t yet been revealed which Chinese partner to Volkswagen will receive the Taigun when it goes on the market in early 2014 but we suspect it will be First Automobile Works and produced in the new Foshan factory due to the introduction of the MQB platform on which the new mini SUV is based.
Power for the Chinese market is expected to be a 1.0T engine as with the Ford Ecosport, although we suspect a larger naturally aspirated model will be introduced alongside it as well. The 1.0T is a three cylinder engine producing 175Nm of torque – it doesn’t seem like a great amount but it is plenty for inner city light-to-light charging and add in the fact the Taigun is expected to be less than 1000kg when launched (some say 985kg) we can expect the car to be a fast little machine with a sub 10 second 0-100kph time.
The chunky lines of the mini offroader are likely to win converts from Chinese consumers that have already fallen in love with the likes of the Ford Ecosport.
