The revival of the Datsun brand for developing markets last week sent shockwaves around the worldwide automotive media, but the new Datsun’s were not to be the same Datsun’s of yesteryear, the new Datsuns are set to be low cost front wheel drive vehicles for developing markets.
Chinese automotive media were highly interested in the 3,000USD car, which works out to 18,000RMB. Currently only several Chinese brands have been able to reach the mythical 3000USD price point but that was by using 20 year old car designs such as the original Suzuki Alto. 25,000RMB seems to be a price point that most low cost Chinese brands can reach relatively easily if volumes are high enough.
Volkswagen are expected to launch a low cost car in the Chinese market in the near future with pricing around 50,000RMB to 70,000RMB, still considerably higher than Datsun’s first model but comparatively low for the Chinese market.
