The Chengdu Auto Show opens tomorrow, the local players and international players are out in force and prepping their wares for the much needed Western Chinese market. Plucky little upstart Chengdu Yema are planning to show their new F18 SUV which actually looks like a comprehensive vehicle, if named after an American war bird.

The compact SUV has parts of Ford’s latest Kuga and Kia’s current Sportage in the front and side profile with a hint of Buick’s Encore in the rear. It’s not Yema’s first time at picking off design styles from multiple cars, but its the first time that company has been able to pull them all into a comprehensive design package, previous examples were a little shaky to say the least.

Power comes from a 1.5L engine from Mitsubishi although we suspect that they might introduce a turbo version at some point in the very near future.

Can’t stop seeing the Kia Sportage in this. Is there any connection between the two or is Yema just biting hard?

Its pretty much Sichuan Yema getting busy with other cars.

Yema is an amazing company. It apparently has no domestic, much less foreign, affiliation and yet it keeps on turning out fresh metal. Nothing stodgy or dated in its designs. Hints of the old Maestro/Montego roots are no longer evident. How can it keep turning our models that it never seems to produce in any volume?
Like a magnet, it drew BAIC’s former VP, Zhang Xin, who apparently was looking for something more exciting than party line.
I really liked the little open wheeled mini two seater that it showed a few years ago.
