Great Wall Going into New Zealand

New Zealand, that tiny country on the edge of the world famous for its breath taking scenery and legions of Orcs that roam the country side is about to get a new visitor to its shores: Great Wall Automobile.

Great Wall Motors is set to become the first Chinese car brand available in New Zealand, with a national dealer network due to be confirmed in time for an October launch on both sides of the Tasman.

Likely to be known in Australia and New Zealand as GWM, Great Wall Motors is China’s largest privately-owned vehicle maker.

It already exports to about 60 countries in Asia, Europe and South America, and is planning to open production facilities in Russia as well as China.

The first model offered here will be a 2.3-litre double-cab utility which, with a price tag of under $20,000, will undercut rival products by thousands of dollars.

The GWM double cab ute will be just the start, says Ateco Automotive Pty Ltd managing director Ric Hull.

The ute will be followed soon after by a single-cab ute, a compact SUV and an entry-level light car.

Pricing will be comparable to similar Korean models but with a significantly higher specification.

Rather than using names for its various models, which in China include vehicles called the Safe, Sailor and Wingle, GWM is expected to adopt an alpha-numeric system for its Australia and New Zealand line-up.

GWM vehicles will be imported by Ateco Automotive, which already handles brands here, including Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Ferrari, and Citroen.

Announcing its intention to bring Great Wall Motors vehicles to New Zealand this year, Ateco also confirmed it is pressing on with previously revealed plans to introduce the Chinese Chery brand in 2009.

A network of five or six GWM dealers is planned for New Zealand.

Santana + Fiber glass + mad weekend = ocean going vessel with gullwing doors

This has to be the most awesome Chinese vehicle we’ve ever seen. Nothing gets better than this, not the Roewe 750, the 550, the Geely GT, or anything else we’ve ever mentioned as being great, or awesome.

This guy took his Santana 1000, a whole wad of fiber glass (there doesnt appear to be any metal panel lines down the sides)  and for extra added ultra coolness:

SCEO German sales plan slapped down by Judge

Bad news for Double Ring:

MUNICH — A court has banned German sales of an SUV made by Chinese automaker Shuanghuan.

The court in Munich ruled that Shuanghuan’s CEO infringes BMW’s design rights. BMW claims the CEO closely resembles its X5 premium SUV. It started legal proceedings last September to stop CEO sales in Germany.

Shuanghuan’s German importer China Automobile Deutschland denied that the CEO infringes BMW’s design rights.

Managing Director Karl Schloessl told Automotive News Europe that the CEO was a totally different car from the X5. “Even when you look at some BMWs and some Audis, there are similarities,” he said.

Schloessl said that he planned to appeal against the court ruling. ‘It is a one-sided judgment, but of course it was made in Munich. It’s a BMW city,” he said.

What was spotted, where!

Some Chinese car companies use foreign cars as ‘inspiration’, other companies quite sensibly take foreign made cars and use them as benchmarks, especially for performance and suspension. This kind of behavior isnt just limited to the automobile world, every manufacturer in the world likes to check out what his/her opponents are making.

These two cars were (allegedly) spotted in a SAIC R&D center car park, and then posted on Chinese automotive forums website.

Chery A3, Spotted out and about - On market in July

The Chery A3 Sedan will be put on the market as early as next month according to internet reports, and the hatchback version will follow shortly.

The A3 sedan version was spotted out below, presumebly being used by a Chery employee to do his grocery shopping:

a3-taxi-rank.jpg a3-taxi-ranka.jpg a3-taxi-rankb.jpg

a3-taxi-rankc.jpg a3-taxi-rankd.jpg a3-taxi-ranke.jpg

Oddly enough, the white A3 is carrying a Taxi sign on the dash (the red light that shows if the taxi is free or not). Could Chery be using the A3 as a high stress test mule? What a perfect test for the vehicle if they are! What could be more stressful on a car than being used as a taxi?

The A3 is set to be more expensive than the current A5. The A3 has vastly improved safety standards over the A5, and actually utilizes ESP technology, a first for a Chery vehicle.

Top selling SUV’s from Jan to May 08

Chinese consumers were well aware of the impending gasoline price rises, but continued to buy SUV’s in their thousands.

  • Dongfeng Honda CRV: 31,840
  • GreatWall Hover: 23,766
  • Beijing Hyundai Tuscon: 21,692
  • Chery Tiggo: 18,537
  • Kia Sportage: 11,661

Out of the above list, the Chery Tiggo is the cheapest and the Dongfeng Honda CRV is the most expensive. The Hover remains popular due to its fashionable design and cheap price, the Tiggo probably remains popular in the market place due to its size (suitable for inner city tight spots) and reasonably good quality. The Kia Sportage could be popular with consumers due to its size, and price which starts at a mere 140,000rmb for the 2.0l manual.

SAIC in talks for buying Volvo?

Imagine the mess now: Ford own the engines, Tata own Jaguar. Volvo and Jaguar have many shared components, will they want to work together, or will the Roewe engines find itself in yet another car?

Ford Motor is in negotiations with a Chinese company to sell its Volvo cars division, the Swedish business publication Dagens Industri reported today on its Web site.

A Russian investor is also believed to be interested in acquiring the division, the report said.

Media reports have suggested that the Chinese company involved in talks is Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp.

A Ford spokesman said: “We have been consistently saying since the end of last year that Volvo is not for sale. We are focused on improving Volvo’s business results.”

Ford’s new major shareholder Kirk Kerkorian, with a 6.49 percent holding, has stated he would like to see the cash strapped U.S. automotive giant divest itself of Volvo which it acquired for 50 billion Swedish crowns in 1999.

Ford’s CEO Alan Mulally began a strategic review around a year ago with the sale of Volvo thought to be among his goals. However the company has denied this.

A number of automotive companies have been connected with a purchase of Volvo over the last year, including Germany’s BMW and Japan’s Mazda.

The Volvo brand has shown good growth over the last few years in Europe, and has a revamped model line-up.

However, in the U.S. market, Volvo has skidded under exchange rate pressures, triggering several years of sales declines. Rather than reaching for a hoped-for goal of 200,000 North American sales by 2010, Volvo is instead trying to stop a slide below 90,000 units.

In response, Volvo calling on many unprofitable U.S. dealers to walk away from the franchise, an effort expected to cut about 20 percent of the dealerships by the end of the year.

Volvo says it will cut 2,000 jobs

Volvo Cars, owned by the struggling Ford Motor, said today it would cut 2,000 jobs across its operations in an effort to trim costs.

Volvo said it planned to cut its work force by 1,400 white-collar staff and 600 blue-collar workers to offset the impact of a weak auto market and surging raw material costs.

The company has long been struggling with negative currency swings, mainly due to a weaker dollar, as well as steep rises in steel prices, but recently the situation had worsened, it said.

“Previously, this had been balanced with the help of cost reduction and efficiency programs,” it said in a statement.

“However, with a continued declining U.S. market, continued price increases on raw materials, and weaker market conditions in Europe, the situation has deteriorated.”

Ford in November took Volvo, which reported a first-quarter pretax loss of $151 million, off the auction block and said it planned to integrate its subsidiary more closely into purchasing and development efforts and that it would focus on improving Volvo’s cost structure.

Volvo said the staff cuts announced today were part of a scheme to cut costs by 4 billion Swedish crowns ($662 million).

Most of the job cuts announced today would be carried out in Sweden with 1,200 employees given notice at its operations in Gothenburg on the country’s west coast.

Either way, we Volvo get taken over by a Chinese company. We’ve always wanted a Volvo wagon, but they’re little out of my price range!
