Pie faced QQ Sports edition launched in Beijing

qq-sport.JPGThe Chery WOW concept from a few years back has finally been shown off again, but this time its to be known as the QQ Sports edition.

We mistakenly believed the QQ Sports to be a super cheap motor, but obviously Chery had a sports car in mind when they started to put the QQ sports together.

Initial criticisms that have been leveled against the QQ sport surprisingly parent about the looks, the back seat is where the problem lies! People have already commented that the rear two seats are ‘practically useless’ for people to use, and will be best fit for putting your pets in.

The red/black interior styling is certainly interesting.

The gearbox is the same 5 speed manual that is featured in the normal QQ range, engine wise, we are not entirely sure yet. Possibly the 800CC turbo that Chery once talked about?

AERTE to get into car business?

Aerte is a Hong Kong company specializing in automotive electronics, but recent reports suggest that they may actually be getting into the car production business, specifically, high end performance cars.

The Crossover Coupe from Aerte gets the thumbs up from China Car Times, its certainly different. If the car sees production is another matter all together!

Audi Q5 - released in Beijing, but to be made in China?

audiq5.jpgThe Audi Q5, a compact crossover style SUV was finally released at the Beijing Auto Show this week. The most interesting thing about it is, the Q5 is based on an entirely new platform and not a hand me down from the VW group.  Audi’s joint venture partner in China, FAW are planning to build a new factory in Changchun (North East China) to accomodate production of the Q5. Production is expected to begin in August, 2009, leaving us with a long time to wait to see the Q5. The Q3 is expected to be based on the smaller VW Tiguan platform, and be released in 2010, the Q3 will be a 3 door SUV.

The Q5 is expected to come with 2.0l turbo gasoline engines, diesel engines and also hybrid models. Audi’s new 7 speed gearbox, S-Tronic, is also set to make a debut in the Q5.

Beijing 2008: Geely GT - makes Jag XF look old hat

No doubt those that will read this article and link to it will make the usual Chinese car jokes “Will it come with lead paint?” “Will it fold up like a Cola can in a crash?” but just for a moment take in the lines of Geely GT. Note the lack of a Geely badge, which may hint at a potential upmarket brand from Geely, the way that the big Japanese brands made separate brands (Infiniti, Lexus, etc) back in the 90’s.

This GT alone, should go some way in persuading the naysayers that believe Geely is not ‘serious‘ about making cars. The cars that they’ve shown off at the 2008 Beijing Auto Show are by far their best yet. For more on the Geely GT check out our previous article on the Geely GT

China’s Automobile Joint Venture Requirement May End in 2010

Mr. Zhang Xiaoyu gave an interesting and inspiring speech during the opening ceremony of the Automotive Manufacturing in China conference in Beijing Wednesday evening. Mr. Zhang who is presently the Deputy Director of the China Confederation of Machinery Industry has held many high level positions in the Chinese government relating to the automobile industry during his career.

While not presently a government employee, Mr. Zhang is certainly someone who is “in the know” which is why it came as a surprise when Mr. Zhang revealed 2010 as the year when China will likely change the present regulations requiring foreign automobile manufacturers to form joint ventures with Chinese partners in order to manufacture cars for sale in the China.

China set down regulations for its joint venture legislation relating to automobile manufacturing in 1994 and 2004. Given the rapid growth China’s automobile industry has seen during the past four years a change in legislation in 2010 would not be off track.

One wonders how this news will affect China’s automobile industry before 2010? Will foreign manufacturers put joint venture negotiations on hold until regulations change so they can go it alone in China? My own bet is “No” because China is far too important a market to put on hold for 2-3 years. We may see foreign investors trying to insert clauses into joint venture agreements allowing for pre-arranged buy-out terms once regulations do change, but it will be interesting to see if any Chinese partners agree with such terms. Exciting times.

Beijing Auto Show: Conferences, Conferences, Conferences

Ever since Beijing received the bid to host the Beijing 2008 Olympics everything in Beijing has become big. Beijing now hosts the most massive and most beautiful airport in the world. Truly. If you fly in from overseas you will be amazed.

Beijing’s hosting of the 2008 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition is no different. The show is being held at the new, massive China International Exhibition Center New Venue in the Tianzhu Airport Industrial Zone between the 5th and 6th ring roads near the Beijing Airport. It is huge. But still, not big enough for Beijing: they have built temporary tents to house the auto parts section of the exhibition.

And this year there will be more conferences than any human can possibly attend. But you may find many of them very interesting:

We will be trying to cover a little of all of these conferences and will follow up with articles about each one of them.

Skinhua posts top 8 models from the Car Show

Xinhua, the Chinese state broadcaster , often called Skinhua due to the large enormous amount of pretty girls on its website, has posted the 8 prettiest models from Beijing Car Show

New Beijing Jeeps

At the Beijing Car Show, the new Beijing Jeeps were unveiled, the Brave Warrior which is meant for military use plus a newer updated version of the original 2020, except this one is called the ‘Gladiator’ (角斗士 - jiao dou zhan)

The Brave Warrior:

China Car Times commented on the Brave Warrior before, but once you get up close to it, you can clearly see that this jeep is no where near as good as the original 2020 - it feels too plasticy, especially when compared to the combined Soviet and American technology that went into the first 2020. The doors feel like they could be ripped off by hand never mind bullets or missiles. I’d rather drive a Citroen 2CV into battle than this, at least I’d feel safer.

Dong Feng Coupe - Just what is that back part for?

dong feng coupe

China Car Time has been confused, confused ever since we first laid eyes on the above new Dong Feng Coupe. It looks okay I guess, nothing super special from the front, but once you start to move towards the rear of the car you see:

p1040799.JPG

Just what is the need for that plastic bellows? China Car times has posted before about this Dong Feng Coupe, but even then we were confused, but a poster on China Car Forums has said

This is a new concept in hybrid vehicles. It uses compressed air to supplement the gas engine. When the spoiler at the rear is pushed downward it collapses the YELLOW BELLOWS and creates a chamber of compressed air. After the pressure is spent the driver knows it because he can’t see out the back window anymore, and so he gets out and pushes downward on the spoiler again…….and so it goes.

Then another poster goes onto comment:

The “hybrid” post is a joke guys… peeps r dense round here.

China Car Times has trawled Google and Baidu in search of why this DongFeng has the plastic bellows under the rear and just cant find a good answer. Theres no mention of it being a hybrid, in fact, just the opposite - it comes with a 2.4 Liter 134BHP engine…… Could it just be that the rear hatch can be raised or lowered to allow the trunk/boot take a greater load? In which case Dong Feng must be crazy for trying to make a sports car into a goods vehicle.

Chicks of Beijing Car Show 2006

A car show wouldnt be a car show without girls draping over them, China Car Time has brought you a small selection of what was one offer at Beijing Car Show, if we took too many pictures of pretty girls then my prettier half would no doubt cease performing her matriarchal duties i.e. cooking and laundry, this would leave China Car Time in quite a pickle! So here is a small yet modest collection of hot chicks from Beijing Car Show 2006. Click here to view the full post!
